Originally created by Edgar Rice Burroughs, John Carter is a character with a long and rich history dating back to 1911. First premiering in A Princess of Mars, John Carter served as a Confederate captain in the Civil War, before dying and being transported by ‘astral projection’ into an exact duplicate of his body on Mars, where he lived a life full of adventure, love, and war.

The Barsoom Series featured 11 books in which John Carter was either a major or supporting character. He’s been referenced in a number of sci-fi epics and influenced tons of authors in his century long history. So basically that means his movie trilogy potential is there.
Disney’s John Carter stars Taylor Kitsch as the title character, with Lynn Collins, Mark Strong, Willem Dafoe, Bryan Cranston, Dominic West, and Thomas Haden Church just to name a few. Here’s the official synopsis:
From Academy Award-winning filmmaker Andrew Stanton (“Finding Nemo,” “WALL-E”), JOHN CARTER OF MARS brings this captivating hero to the big screen in a stunning adventure epic set on the wounded planet of Mars, a world inhabited by warrior tribes and exotic desert beings. Based on the first of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ “Barsoom Series,” the film chronicles the journey of Civil-War veteran John Carter (TAYLOR KITSCH), who finds himself battling a new and mysterious war amidst a host of strange Martian inhabitants, including Tars Tarkas (WILLEM DAFOE) and Dejah Thoris (LYNN COLLINS).
Here was the first trailer released that showed us our first glimpse at this re-imagined sci-fi classic:
Pretty cool. Then along with a new pic from EW there was a little more from the director Andrew Stanton about what we see in the pic. SuperHeroHype reports:
Stanton tells the magazine that the White Apes are “a formidable creature that you kind of hear about throughout the movie, but you never really witness.” He says they they are “nocturnal, almost like moles — they stopped using their eyes, and just had a heightened sense of smell.”
The director added that in the film, John Carter (Taylor Kitsch) “needs an army to solve his big problem in the third act, and the only army he knows was his previous captors. When he goes back, the game has changed, and he gets incarcerated. This is what he has to get out of. He has to get out of jail and not get killed by these apes in order to get his bigger problem solved.”
As you can see in the picture, Carter is chained up, which the Tharks did for entertainnment. “He has this one Superman-like ability where he can leap farther than we can here [on Earth]. But it’s like being a man on the moon. It can’t be forever. He can build up momentum… They give him a nice long length of chain, so he can bounce around, but he can’t go out of the arena.”
Also at SHH are three new banners to promote the movie along with a ton of new images from the film:

I have high hopes for this movie, I was a big John Carter fan when I was younger. Taylor Kitsch has had some decent roles, the most memorable being his character on Friday Night Lights, and I think this might be the film series that propels him to the big league. Or not, it’s hard to tell these days.
John Carter hits theaters on March 9, 2012.
