Grizzly Dailies – Neighborhood Watch, Looper, and Bullet to the Head

Welcome to Grizzly Dailies! A new feature where we will cover a bunch of movie news in the manner we love. Jam packing a ton of links and info in one post so you don’t have to waste your valuable time (and ours) by combing through a ton of articles!

And if you are unaware of the term ‘Dailies‘ don’t expect this feature every day. It’s a film term and not a promise. Just wanted to get that out there.

Zoe Kravitz Joins Will Smith In After Earth – (GeekTyrant)

I know a lot of us aren’t eagerly waiting for M. Night Shyamalan‘s next film, but it’s coming whether we like it or not. It’s titled After Earth and stars Will Smith and his son Jaden in a futuristic Sci-Fi adventure. It should be retitled Trainwreck but that’s fine, I can live with it. Anyways, Zoe Kravitz is in talks to portray Smith’s daughter:

In the story “humans no longer live on Earth after it becomes inhospitable. The elder Smith is playing a hero, while Jaden is his son, considered a failure as a warrior. When the two crash-land on an alien planet, it is up to the son to save the dad.”

Zoe Kravitz and Sophie Okonedo are both in talks to join the film production, and if cast they will join Will Smith and his son Jaden. THR reports that Kravitz would end up playing Smith’s daughter, and Okonedo would take on the role of his wife.

First Look At Neighborhood Watch – (CinemaBlend)

Ben Stiller. Vince Vaughn. Jonah Hill. Richard Ayoade. I know three of those names, and fans of The IT Crowd will know the fourth. They star together in Akiva Schaffer‘s Neighborhood Watch, and here’s our first look at the team in action. And by action, I mean they are walking down the street.

Neighborhood Watch stars Stiller, Vaughn, Hill, Ayoade, as well as Will Forte and Billy Crudup in a story about a group of men who use the local neighborhood watch responsibilities as an excuse to get out of the house and maybe pal around the neighborhood a bit. They end up encountering a situation that, as producer Shawn Levy puts it, they’re “ill-equipped” for. Spoiler alert: from the sound of it, aliens are involved. Does that fall under neighborhood watch’s jurisdiction?

Awesome. While I immediately picture a galactic Dodgeball tournament, I acknowledge that more than likely won’t happen. I can still hope…

A Starship Troopers Remake? – (SuperHeroHype)

Now lets talk about yet another movie that absolutely does not need a remake. Paul Verhoeven‘s 1997 sci-fi classic Starship Troopers was ridiculously awesome and is a cult favorite, not to mention one of the best things Neil Patrick Harris has ever done. So with news of a possible remake in the works my fear of what Hollywood is coming to has grown immensely. Also I just vomited.

With the Total Recall remake coming out next year, producer Neal Moritz is next turning his attention to a reboot of Paul Verhoeven’s 1997 sci-fi film Starship Troopers, which was loosely based on the novel by Robert A. Heinlein.

Vulture has the news, saying that Thor and X-Men: First Class screenwriters Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz have come on board to write the script. The duo also worked on episodes of “Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles” and “Fringe.”

A Tomb Raider Reboot? – (SuperHeroHype)

And on the flip side, a character who could absolutely use a reboot will most likely be getting one thanks to producer Graham King. Not that the first two were terrible, which starred Angelina Jolie in the title role of Lara Croft, but they certainly weren’t spectacular.

ComingSoon.net had a chance to sit down with producer Graham King, who has once again reteamed with Martin Scorsese for Hugo, a magical fantasy based on Brian Selznick’s “The Invention of Hugo Cabret.”

When he brought up the reboot of Tomb Raider he’s working on with Iron Man writers Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby, we wondered about the decision considering the reaction to the previous two movies starring Angelina Jolie. (Ironically, King also produced Jolie’s directorial debut In the Land of Blood & Honey, which will be released by FilmDistrict next month.)

He gave us some idea on the direction they plan to take, which is definitely more along the lines of Casino Royale or Batman Begins:

“Listen, the box office, they weren’t disasters but I find it interesting that the story that we’re telling is really the story before she became Lara Croft, so it is a character piece. It does have a lot of really great characters, but it’s a lot of action and a lot of fun, and for me, it’s something very different. I’ve not really done a movie like that before, but I really gravitated to rebooting this franchise and we’re going to give it a shot.”

Looper Set Photo & Details – (Cinema Blend)

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is riding a wave of awesomeness. One of my favorite young actors working right now, even G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra couldn’t change that. He’s currently working on a new film called Looper, which also stars Bruce Willis so I’m pretty much sold completely. Here’s a set pic of a very interesting machine as well as some details from the director:

Little is known about Looper beyond this: Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Brick) plays a killer whose victims are sent back in time. One day, he encounters a target (Bruce Willis), only to realize that it’s an older version of himself. To complete the illusion, Johnson tells The L.A. Times that they’re using prosthetics to help JGL look more like the Die Hard icon. But also, Johnson is hoping to coax some Willis-isms out of Gordon-Levitt’s performance.

I’m assuming this is a time machine, as it looks similar to the one I have constructed in my basement…

“The biggest thing is Joe’s performance,” the director notes. “He’s really doing Bruce in a big and daring way, but he strikes a balance between obviously imitating Bruce and also building this organic performance.”

He speaks a little on the use of time travel in the film, which is never easy to successfully accomplish:

“If you just tell somebody the plot, you’re inevitably telling them the time travel stuff, but the movie actually uses that as a set-up,” he explains. “The best parallel I can draw is to the first Terminator movie where time travel is used to set up this impossible situation between these people and then that situation plays itself out.”

Stills From Bullet to the Head – (Cinema Blend)

Now I know its hard to think of Stallone and not immediately wonder about The Expendables 2, but here is something else to think about.  A few new stills were released from his upcoming Bullet to the Head, and they are actually pretty amazing.

Obviously axe-fighting is the premiere fight scene in any action flick, especially when it’s between Stallone and Jason Mamoa, who plays the movies villain. The film also stars Christian Slater, if anyone’s wondering what happened to him.

Wow. Do you think your in shape? You work out, eat right, all that shit? This guy is 65 freaking years old! So go back to the gym and start crying because you’ll never look like that.

Cheadle’s Miles Davis Gangster Biopic? (CinemaBlend)

Don Cheadle has been working on a biopic for jazz legend Miles Davis for a while now. It’s obviously a passion for him, which is generally always a good thing when a star takes on a project like this. But some recent comments about the plot of the film raises a few questions. Questions like “What the hell?” and “Are we talking about the same Miles Davis?”

First off, there’s some good news for anyone looking forward to Cheadle’s take on the musician. Cheadle told the newspaper that they’ve got a studio offer for the film, and that right now they’re negotiating about budget. Good to hear, great to see things progressing. That, however, is when things start to get weird. Cheadle explains his take on the story:

“It’s not a biopic, per se. It’s a gangster pic. It’s a movie that Miles Davis would have wanted to star in. Without throwing history away, we’re trying to shuffle it and make it more cubist. The bulk of it takes place in ’79, in a period where he actually wasn’t playing. But we traverse a lot of it his life, but it’s not a cradle to grave story.”

So a gangster pic about a jazz musician set in a time when he wasn’t playing music but shuffling history so that it is a gangster pic that miles Davis himself would have liked to have starred in. I’m confused, but I like both Cheadle and Davis so I look forward to hearing more about it.

And that’s our look at the Grizzly Dailies! Hope you enjoyed it, and I’ll have more for you next week!
