Fairy tales are certainly becoming all the rage these days. With TV shows like Once Upon a Time and Grimm, and 786 movies coming out about Snow White, it’s pretty clear that they’re becoming Hollywood’s new trend. Whatever keeps people from obsessing over sparkly vampires, I guess.
It’s about time someone besides Cinderella got her due. If I see one more trailer for anything starring Hilary Duff or some made-for-TV movie, I’m going to jam a pencil in my eye. Snow White and the Huntsman, slated to release in theaters this summer, appears to the best of the Snow White bunch. I stress the word appears. The other film that’s getting some buzz is Mirror, Mirror, starring Julia Roberts and Lily Collins, will hit theaters at the end of this month. It looks like a train wreck from start to finish. The trailer is not even good, don’t watch it. Don’t do it, I say!
Snow White and the Huntsman has a good teaser trailer that just released in Japan. Charlize Theron looks good. Chris Hemsworth always looks good. Kristen Stewart looks like a ferret, but she’s a decent actress. The trailer provides action, intrigue, and really makes the story look dark which is awesome to bring to a normally light, fluffy story. This all proves one thing and one thing alone: those bitches can cut a good trailer.
This may or may not be a good movie. They did their job in that I am intrigued enough to go and see the thing; so they at least have my nine bucks. However, a good trailer does not a good film make. I think Godzilla taught us that valuable lesson. That trailer scared the shit out of me and the movie was God awful. It may fall in line with recent failures like Robin Hood or Alexander; movies that tried their darndest to be epic and ended up being totally lame.
I will say that visually this movie looks appealing. Everyone turns into birds all the time which is very Hitchcock, and I like that. Though at times I half expected it to cut to Madonna singing “Frozen.” The color palette they are using is great – all snowy white, grays and blacks with the occasional punch of bold red. It really captures the essence of the story. Plus, there are people fighting and riding around on horses, and a giant nondescript beast of some sort. You gotta have that giant nondescript beast.
