News on Marvel Sequels!

Which sequels? Well, pretty much all of them. Iron Man 3, Thor 2, Captain America 2, Avengers 2… Yep. That many. But this is the Express so let’s speed through this. First check out this interview with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige. He talks about pretty much every character in The Avengers.

Here is a handy list of highlights to entice you further:

  • He’s seen an unfinished version of The Amazing Spider-Man and says it is excellent and should quiet concerns over the idea of rebooting the franchise.
  • They have an option for Whedon to direct The Avengers 2 when and if the time comes.
  • There are currently no plans to do a new Hulk movie with Mark Ruffalo.
  • Iron Man 3 starts filming in five weeks in North Carolina.
  • When approaching Iron Man 3, their gut instinct was to not make it be a pseudo-Avengers 2.  It’s a full-on Tony Stark movie.
  • Iron Man 3 is inspired by the first half of Iron Man 1 in that they’re metaphorically putting Tony back in the cave.  He’s stripped of everything, back against a wall, and has nothing but his intelligence to get him out.
  • Filming on Thor 2 begins in three months in London and it picks up where the first film left off in terms of Jane and Oden.
  • Thor 2 also addresses what’s been happening in the nine realms with the Asgardians unable to use the Bifrost.
  • Loki has a part in Thor 2, but there will be a different, big villain.
  • The crux of Thor 2 is continuing the dynamic between Thor and Jane, as well as the relationship between Thor and Odin.
  • Feige says there are no plans for Marvel and Pixar to team up on a feature.
  • Creative talks have been progressing for years between Marvel and Disney about possibly doing a Marvel property as an animated film.
  • Edgar Wright did not film something for Marvel recently, but Feige says to pay attention to Wright’s tweets in the coming months “and that might change.”
  • They’re still figuring out how much period flashbacks to include in Captain America 2.
  • The primary story of Captain America 2 will be Steve Rogers figuring out his place in the world. For the time-being, he’ll be staying with S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • They should announce by Comic-Con or before what’s coming out in May 2014.
  • Zak Penn did not write a Doctor Strange movie.
  • Feige says, “depending on what Edgar Wright films for us” circumstances could possibly force them to make three films in one year.

Iron Man 3: It looks like Guy Pearce may make an appearance as Dr. Aldrich Killian, co-creator of the Extremis virus that that features in Iron Man: Extremis, the storyline the film is said to be loosely based on. In the comics, the Extremis virus is given to terrorists by Killian who inject it into fellow terrorist Mallen, creating a superhuman terror that Iron Man has to deal with. I’d say the inclusion of Pearce means Killian is the one injected instead of Mallen, but that’s just my thoughts on it.

Also news that Iron Man 3 will be Co-Produced in China adds a little spark to the fire that Ben Kingsley might be playing the Mandarin, even though producers said it wasn’t the Mandarin.

Thor 2: Chris Hemsworth talks about the new Asgard, new director (Game of Thrones Alan Taylor), and more.

I have read a script and we start shooting in August. I met with Alan Taylor a couple of months ago and Natalie Portman and I and Alan and a couple of Marvel guys and it was hugely exciting. Ken [Branagh] did such a wonderful job and, with scheduling or what have you, he didn’t end up doing this one, but I’m a big fan of the GAME OF THRONES series, which is Alan’s latest work, and I think that is what’s exciting about the second one: making it sort of more tangible and having a more organic feel to Asgard and that world. I think the science fiction element to THOR… the danger is it falls a little bit into the world of it’s “tough to throw a light to.” I think of big waterfalls and mountains and a Viking influence, where the Norse mythology kind of grew from. Having that in Asgard is going to make it all the more special and that’s what Alan wants to bring to it. I think that would be the new aspect to this one.

Sounds good. But anything GoT related has that effect on me. Thor 2 starts filming in three months.

A Lobo Movie! Yes! Oh… family friendly…

Yea, so apparently Joel Silver wants to produce a family friendly Lobo movie, who is a character that is clearly known as being family friendly. Yep, a PG-13 Lobo movie.

Pretty much the worst idea in history. Seriously. Lobo is like Wolverine and Punisher mixed with Clint Eastwood plus bad attitude and a speck of gnarly space motorcycle. And they want to make it a family friendly romp. GammaSquad reports:

Apparently the script is all about Lobo teaming up with a tomboy and going on a crazy adventure full of hijinks. If that doesn’t sound nauseating enough, it’ll be directed by Brad Peyton, who specializes in making sequels that seem like crappy direct-to-video knock-offs of the original (“Journey 2″, “Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore”).

I’m all for a Lobo movie… Just do it right, please?

Beware the Batman Teaser!

Our first look at the upcoming Cartoon Network series Beware the Batman has arrived.  It’s short, but it gives us a good look at the style of the show, the Batmobile, and the voice that isn’t Kevin Conroy but we’ve reached a point where we will have to move past that fact. Eventually. We miss you already Kevin. Anyways, here’s the teaser.

Totally undecided. But its Batman so I will watch it.

New Amazing Spider-Man Posters!

Not a bunch of news as we are getting pretty close to release, but here are a couple kick ass posters for The Amazing Spider-Man:

Sin City 2 is Finally Happening!

7 years ago Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller (and Quentin Tarantino) brought us a great adaptation of Miller’s Sin City novels. More specifically the film was based on three Sin City books; The Hard Goodbye, The Big Fat Kill, and That Yellow Bastard. A sequel has been in development for a long time, well… 7 years long. But finally the announcement was made that A Dame to Kill For is finally going into production. Here’s the press release:

Filmmakers Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller, along with producer Alexander Rodnyansky, have announced that production will commence on the highly anticipated sequel to 2005’s Sin City, entitled Sin City: A Dame To Kill For. The film will be produced by AR Films and Quick Draw Productions, financed through AR Films U.S and released domestically by Dimension Films.

“The first question I am always asked is “When will you make another Sin City? ,” said Rodriquez. “I have wanted to re-team with Frank Miller and return to the world he created since the day we wrapped the original, but have felt a duty to the fans to wait until we had something truly exceptional that would meet and exceed what have become epic expectations. A Dame To Kill For will certainly be worth the wait.”

Sin City creator, screenwriter and co-director Frank Miller said, “The first Sin City knocked out audiences who had never seen anything like it before. Robert Rodriguez and I are going to shake things up and deliver a ferocious film experience that is going to go even further than the first.“

A Dame to Kill For features Dwight (Clive Owen), Marv (Mickey Rourke), Nancy (Jessica Alba), Gail (Rosario Dawson) and a lot of other characters already featured in the original Sin City film, so I would expect a lot of the original characters to return. Robert Rodriguez announced that Rosario Dawson, Mickey Rourke, and Michael Madsen will be returning for the sequel.  He also said ‘the sequel will have the same three-story structure as the first movie, with the story from A Dame to Kill For mingled with two new storylines by Frank Miller.’ Bring it on.

It’s Clobberin’ Time. I’m Ron F#$%ing Swanson!

And yes, I think I’m going to have to take this one to a 6th top story. We will never hide our love for the character of Ron Swanson on Parks & Rec, played by Nick Offerman. Recently he and wife Megan Mullally appeared on the podcast WTF with Marc Maron and he revealed the one Marvel character he wanted to play. io9 reports:

Marc Maron: I’m sure you could probably be a pretty menacing heavy. If you wanted. You remind me of, do you know Michael Chiklis. Are you guys friends?

Nick Offerman: No, I’ve never met him but I was really upset when he got to play Ben Grimm in the Fantastic Four. That’s the only superhero with a big head. All these years I was like, “Someday they’re gonna make Fantastic Four, and I’m gonna be the one saying, “It’s clobberin’ time!”

There’s a small part of the interview there as well as a link to the full podcast. I think Nick Offerman would rule as The Thing, but I’d much rather see him in his own Ron Swanson movie. Seriously. I would eat that up. Wrapped with bacon. Followed by an after dinner omelette.

“That’s it. This article is over. Go home.”
