For those of you who were completely lost by that obscure You, Me, and Dupree reference, don’t worry. You’re not the only one. But what you’ll be even more confused by is the fact that the directors of said film, Joe and Anthony Russo, are set to direct the sequel to Captain America: The First Avenger, entitled Captain America’s Happy Endings With Dupree’s Community Because They’re All In Arrested Development…Oh, yeah, and They’re Carpoolers, Too (for the 12 of you, including myself, who watched that show).
I’m both terrified and excited by this news because while The Russo Brothers aren’t necessarily known for their hard-hitting action directing, I’m interested to see how they’ll branch out in other directions, starting off with what will surely be one of the most anticipated films of 2014…but no pressure, right?
Furthermore, Dominic Cooper, who played Tony Stark’s father ‘Howard Stark’ in the first Captain America film, has no idea about the fate of his character. If you remember correctly (or if you haven’t seen the movie), Steve Rogers gets frozen at the end of the first film and is rediscovered many, many decades after the end of World War II. I thought that was a ballsy ending and it really paid off in the long run, but that’s beside the point. The point is, the Captain America sequel, which takes place in modern times, will be leaving behind an entire cast of characters that made the first film great. So, what do we do? INVENT TIME TRAVEL!
Only joking, but seriously, how the hell are we going to reunite Steve with his true love, Peggy Carter? Will Colonel Chester Phillips make a return? And Red Skull! Got any plans there, time gap? Hopefully we’ll be getting some answers in the upcoming months. But until then, we’ve got Dominic Cooper unable to confirm his place, or possibly lack thereof, in the upcoming Cap movie. Regarding the “comic book culture”, though, he did have this to say:
“I didn’t really grow up with the comics, but I had friends that were, and now I can sort of see the pleasures of them and how creative they are. When you work with people who are so passionate about their product it’s kinda inspiring. They start rambling on to you about, ‘Oh, you know, when you’re character in comic book 42, the emperor turns –‘ and you just sit there nodding your head. But you’re amazed by their excitement, and it’s totally inspiring, although deeply worrying because you know you have a lot of people who have very, very clear views and ideas on how they perceive the characters.”
Here’s to the little shred of hope we have left for the return of Captain America.
