CCI 2012: “Fantastic Four” & “Rust” Directors Confirmed While “Daredevil” Director Drops Out

Comic-Con has been dropping news left and right, but one of the more significant stories of the day has been about, believe it or not, Fantastic Four. Remember that really crappy Chris Evans/Jessica Alba led Fantastic Four movie that came out in 2005? Yeah, well this isn’t it. Chronicle director Josh Trank has been signed on to the reboot of the unpopular series, which is going into production after The Wolverine and the Untitled X-Men: First Class sequel wraps shooting. This is awesome news because Chronicle was one of my favorite films, and he’s pretty much the only director who can make a found-footage film about super-powered teenagers work.

On top of that, the rumors surrounding Eclipse director David Slade dropping out of the Daredevil reboot have been confirmed. Deadline reports that while they have a script everyone likes, he’ll be busy directing the “Hannibal” pilot for NBC. I’m not so sure about this news, but only because I have a hunch that an NBC version of “Hannibal” will not be very successful. The network isn’t exactly known for its scenes involving Ray Liotta eating his own brains. With that in mind, let’s hope they don’t make it all “artsy” and claim that it’s “not about the violence”. Come on, guys. Let’s get real.

But the final Comic-Con announcement I’m going to talk about is possibly the most exciting. Joe Cornish, director of that amazing little movie Attack the Block, is directing a pilot for a new series called “Rust” for Fox. According to Deadline:

“‘Rust’ is a high-octane adventure set in the prairie lands of an unknown time. Life on the Taylor family farm was difficult enough before Jet Jones crashes into the barn, chased by a giant decommissioned war robot! Oldest son Roman Taylor struggles to keep his family’s small farm afloat as the area heals from a devastating world war. While the rest of his family may not trust the mysterious boy with the jetpack, Roman believes the secrets of Jet’s past may be the key to their survival.”

Anyone with half a brain knows that that sounds awesome, especially coming from the dude who made Attack the Block, a film that managed to balance character development and exhilarating monster violence so well I almost shed a tear of joy. My only skepticism is that Fox is going to be handling it. The network is notorious for cancelling shows prematurely. And God as my witness, if Fox cuts off Joe Cornish before Joe Cornish is done Cornishing, I’m going to shank someone.
