Okay. Everyone knows that Marvel is loving their teasers lately. And by lately I mean for the last few years. With the Marvel ReEvolution and Marvel NOW! happening as we speak, the teasers have been coming at us pretty hard for the last few months. This latest round introduced some new books, as well as some creative changes to ongoing series. Usually we cover stuff like this in Comic Rack, but with the amount of info we’ve been getting it gets upgraded to it’s own incredibly well written post!
Now that I’ve placated my ego a little bit, let’s take a look at some old teasers that have been revealed. First up is the ‘XX’ teaser:
Many speculated that the teaser pointed to a new all female X-team written by Brian Wood with art by Olivier Coipel, which is pretty much exactly what it will be. Marvel has revealed that Wood’s new title will be the new adjectiveless X-Men, and will in fact feature an all female team:
[box_light]This April, Storm, Rogue, Jubilee, Kitty Pryde, Rachel Grey, Rogue & Psylocke redefine what it means to be a Child of the Arom in X-Men #1, kicking offthe all-new ongoing series by the blockbuster creative team of writer Brian Wood (Ultimate Comics X-Men) and artist Oliver Coipel (Avengers VS. X-Men)! As part of Marvel NOW!, X-Men joins a number of titles that will take the Marvel Universe in an exciting all-new direction, as the industry’s top creators join the top Super Heroes to deliver all-new ongoing series, great for new and lapsed readers alike!
An old enemy shows up at the X-Men’s door, seeking asylum from an ancient evil come back to Earth. Meanwhile, Jubilee has come home, and she’s brought with her an orphaned baby who might hold the key to the Earth’s survival…or its destruction! With an imminent alien invasion and an eons-spanning war between brother and sister around the corner, Storm steps up and puts together a team to protect the child and stop a new threat that could destroy all life in the Marvel Universe![/box_light]
The new series takes advantage of the fact that X-characters are extremely talented at being on numerous teams, as Storm leads this group of X-Ladies while pulling double duty along with Psylocke over in Uncanny X-Force. Which is fine, since Wolverine is on pretty much every team in the Marvel U. Axel Alonso and Brian Wood have a little bit more to say on the upcoming X-Men:
[box_light]”This April, double X marks the spot,” said Axel Alonso, Editor In Chief, Marvel Entertainment. “The most popular and powerful female mutants will band together to form a team that’s much more than the sum of its parts, battling for stakes that couldn’t be higher. It’s a mind-bending, heart-pumping, thought-provoking saga that only Brian Wood and Olivier Coipel could tell.”
“How perfect is this? A phenomenal cast of iconic women, powerful, beautiful, multi-faceted characters… this is the X-Men to me, and I’m writing a series to match,” said writer Brian Wood. “ This is an action comic with classic villains like Mark 1 Sentinels, as well as new twists on others (Sublime has a sister?). I love the X-Men – I have since my time on Generation X twelve years ago – and this is kind of as good as it gets for me. And if I do my job right, it’ll be the same for X-Men fans. And wait ’till the last page of #1, when ****** ********* shows up.”[/box_light]
Staying in the X-Men world takes us on to our next teaser called ‘Revolution’, which showcases Fraser Irving as he takes over art duties on Bendis’ Uncanny X-Men starting with issue #5. Uncanny X-Men follows Cyclops main team of Cyclops, Emma Frost, Magneto, Magik, and a few others as they continue their mutant revolution. Irving has had some very celebrated runs recently over with DC, and I for one am glad to see him tackling Cyke and Company, even if it is only until Chris Bachalo returns in issue #9.
Next up is the teaser called Ravenous, which will feature new artist Mateo Scalera on Kathryn Immonen’s Journey into Mystery. The new arc looks to place some Asgardians (Sif, Thor, the Warriors Three) against an apparently hungry wolf-like creature. There are a lot of options as to what the wolf creature could be, such as the Fenris Wolf, or even Hrimhari, a descendant of the Fenris Wolf that has been active in the X-Factor title lately.Still early to speculate, but I would assume more news to be released on this shortly.
And finally we take a look at an Avengers Arena teaser that just may offer a clue, along with some hope, to readers who are upset with some of the deaths taking place in the series. The new teaser is called ‘Game On’, and features three of the island combatants on a video game cartridge, which lends further substance to the belief that this Murderworld of Arcade’s is nothing more than a VR game that the young heroes are strapped in to. At least that’s what I chose to believe, because everybody keeps dying and its hard as a fan to witness all that go down without a chance that they could all survive! Okay, sorry, I went on a little rant there.
That does it for this hour’s teasers! We’ll have a few more to take a look at I’m sure in the coming days, or at least some of the previous ones explained a bit more clearly. Until then, well, read some comics or something. I can’t do everything for you.
