Big news from across the pond regarding two fan favorites, Misfits and Sherlock!
Tv Wise had news that it is pretty much a done deal for a fifth series of the superhero anguish show Misfits. It should air late 2013 and will be composed of 8 episodes.
Series 4 was a flawed series to say the least. Just as it was building up steam it then went on to destroy the excitement the series had built up by having some very mundane episodes creep in. The feel of the whole series was very soap opera-esqe, with a lot of episodes following generic romantic sub plots which failed for the most part to get our attention; in fact almost every character in this new series had a romantic angle of some kind. The series was always going to be an upward struggle. Having to introduce so many new characters in such a short time was bound to be a daunting task, and though this series did not produce any fully formed characters that were real crowd pleasers, they at least managed to give us some potentially fun characters that would no doubt benefit from a new series. The series did have some incredible stand alone moments with the third Rudy and the killer rabbit episodes been highlights and Rudy was the glue that stuck the whole thing together. Hopefully this new series will cut down on the soap opera scenes and get back to them using their powers for a change!
Little else is known about this new series other than writer Mike O’ Leary has come on board. If you are unfamiliar with his work he wrote the recent Misfits companion book and also worked on the very funny and quite surreal web show Misfits: Strung Out which you can catch on E4
There is also talk of a feature film that could be in the works, which was reported by Digital Spy. Howard Overman the creator of the Misfits show said that.
[quote]”I’ve written the first draft of the script and we’ll see what happens, if it happens, it will involve past and present characters, I’m not allowed to give away anything more than that.”[/quote]
Then even more excitingly this bomb shell was revealed.
“Whether or not you’ve completely seen the end of Simon and Alisha, if our movie has its way, is another issue,”
There are very few of the old guard of Misfits left alive at the moment, but if this script involves dead or alive characters as it suggests (or characters stuck in a time loop at the very least) then this blasts the doors wide open for appearances from anyone. My only concern would be that aside from The Inbetweeners movie, very few British films based on a show make a hefty profit. For the most part they are rubbish, but here is hoping that this will not be the case.
Then we jump over to Sherlock, which fans are desperately waiting to reappear on their screens. This news should perk up anyone who is missing the detective. In a recent interview with Radio Times it was suggested there will be a fourth series and possibly even a fifth series for London’s most famous detective. Benedict Cumberbatch said that…
“We’ve agreed to two more series but I could get into trouble for saying that. All I know at the moment is I’m doing these three [episodes for Series 3] and another three [episodes for Series 4].”
He also commented on the possibilities of a series 5 by saying this:
“It just depends on Martin [Freeman] and I’s availability, how long we can keep it going,” came his response. “It depends on Steven [Moffat]’s ability. I’d love to keep it going.”
Amazing news all round then, both series of Sherlock were stunning and more series is never a bad thing. Hopefully Cumberbatch and Freeman will not be as double booked as they were last year, meaning series 4 and 5 could come out a lot sooner than the long-awaited series 3. With a new series of Misfits on the horizon, 2013 will be a great year for fans of British shows.
