‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Casts Drax the Destroyer!

We sure didn’t have to wait very long to hear of the next cast member announced for James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy, following the casting of Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/ Star-Lord. The second member of the team has been announced, with Dave Bautista joining the film as Drax the Destroyer!

Guardians of the Galaxy

Early rumors had Jason Mamoa (Game of ThronesConan the Barbarian) set to take on the role, but it looks like the WWE superstar has won both Marvel and Gunn over. While he certainly has the physique to pull off Drax, we aren’t as convinced with his acting ability. Wrestling stars don’t have the most stellar track record when it comes to feature films, with a few exceptions. Very few exceptions. Luckily Drax has never been much of a talker, so Bautista will no doubt be able to pull of the silent, brooding character.

Drax the Destroyer is actually a human being named Arthur Douglas, who was killed by Thanos and reborn as Drax, a bulky alien who can fly and shoots energy blasts. Drax had one mission and one mission only, and that was to get revenge on Thanos. This led him to join up with the GotG, who frequently deal with Thanos and his craziness.

Bautista has recently had roles in The Man with the Iron Fists and the upcoming Riddick film, so he is certainly getting a big boost to his career with this film. With two members of the Guardians cast that leaves the confirmed roles of Gamora, Groot, and Rocket Raccoon left open, plus whoever else will be joining the cast that we don’t know about. This casting announcement has thrown a little doubt with some fans over whether or not this film is shaping up properly, but we choose to wait and see how the rest of the cast fills out before we  make our judgement.
