Oldboy; Back in 2003 South Korean Director Park Chan-wook released one of the more screwed up movies I’ve seen, and most of it was awesome. Well now, 10 years later it’s getting the old American Remake treatment from none other than the often controversial lightning rod Spike Lee. This time around Josh Brolin will be in the lead role, and from the looks of this first trailer, things are already a little different than I remember.
I imagine that while it will likely remain as violent, if not more, some of the sexual stuff will need to be changed for the notoriously uptight North American audience. Much like the separate cuts of Léon and The Professional in 1994. Léon (the international cut) is about 22 minutes longer, and truly a superior film. What played in North American theaters however was a dumbed down version titled The Professional, which, while still good, feels empty next to its counterpart. I guess we’ll have to wait and see…
Here is the movie’s first Red Band Trailer…
Yeah, hammer time!
In addition to Brolin, and in case you didn’t notice them in the trailer, the film also features Elizabeth Olsen, Samuel L. Jackson, Michael Imperioli, Sharlto Copley and Lance Reddick. It’s nice to see some of my favorite TV actors popping up in Imperioli (The Sopranos) and Reddick (The Wire).
The movie is set for release on October 25th of this year…
