Seth Meyers’ “The Awesomes” Set to Premiere in August on Hulu

The Awesomes is a new comedic superhero cartoon from the brains of SNL‘s Seth Meyers and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’s Mike Shoemaker, that will be debuting on Hulu in August. There’ll also be a screening at Comic-Con, but for now interested parties can watch a trailer below:

We’ll agree that the show looks pretty (don’t say awesome don’t say awesome don’t say awesome) swell, especially since it features voice talent of once-and-current SNL stars such as Kenan Thompson, Bill Hader, Taran Killam, and Myers himself, as well as the likes of Rashida Jones and Ike Barinholtz. The characters sound quirky and hilarious — especially Meyer’s character, “Prock,” who can stop time to come up with plans, yet self-sabotages due to his insecurities, and Thompson’s character, “Impresario,” who can summon virtually anything to help, so long as it’s in the form of his mother (also voiced by Thompson).

But it has to be pointed out that while we’re sure it will be done in a highly original manner, the basic premise of quirky superheroes on the verge of losing government sponsorship is not exactly original.

In fact, one of the funniest live-action superhero series is based on the same damn thing, over at MyDamnChannel — “Save the Supers.” We’re not suggesting any cribbing of any kind; in fact, it’s been reported that Meyers and Shoemaker created the plan for “The Awesomes” in 2006, which predates “Save the Supers.” What we are suggesting is “originality” — when it comes to a genre that’s experienced 70-odd years of comic book serialization, TV shows, and movies — is a relative term.

In any case, we greatly look forward to checking out “The Awesomes,” even as we urge you to also watch the seven-episode series of “Save the Supers” here (as well as its various one-shot spin-offs featuring character spotlights.
