What could be better than a spot of tea and a little 221b on the telly this holiday season? Not having to wait a year for it, for a start! That’s right, Cumberphiles, while the rumors of a Sherlock special are indeed true, you’re going to have to do what Sherlock fans do best; wait.
A far cry from the rumors earlier this year that there would be no series 4 of the acclaimed Sherlock stories, it has now been confirmed that in addition to a series 4, which is set for the ridiculously far off 2016, fans can expect to see their two favorite crime investigators in a Christmas special due out in 2015. The far of dates are due in large part to the incredible fame that the two lead actors Benedict Cumberbatch (Star Trek Into Darkness) and Martin Freeman (The Hobbit) have seen since the first Sherlock series and the ensuing stream of television, film and stage roles the actors have taken on.
While no official announcement has been made on the exact date of the series 4 premiere, we do know it will follow the standard three episode format. We also have this little tidbit from Steven Moffat during the Emmys, in response to whether a fourth season of the show could top the third:
“We have a plan to top it. And I do think our plan is devastating. We’ve practically reduced our cast to tears telling them the plan … we’re probably more excited that we’ve ever been about Sherlock.”
Have your hankies at the ready, Sherlockians.
The promised Christmas time special seems to harken back to the characters origins, with our cast in period costume. While Sir Arthur Conan Doyle wrote stories spanning three eras of British life (Victorian, Edwardian and Georgian), Sherlock is most often portrayed as living in the Edwardian age, and from the looks of this teasing image posted by BBC on twitter, that might just be what fans will get.

Of course, knowing Moffit’s penchant for surprises, they could well be simply attending a fancy dress mystery night. We shall have to wait until next year to solve The Case of The Sherlock Christmas Special. In the meantime, Cumberbatch and Freeman are both in the last installment of the epic adventure The Hobbit, hitting screens this month. In addition, Cumberbatch can be heard in the upcoming Penguins of Madagascar, and starring in The Imitation Game as the famed code breaker Alan Turing. Plus he was recently cast as Marvel’s Doctor Strange.
In spite of the long waits between seasons, fans can rest assured that they WILL get their Sherlock back. In fact, Cumberbatch told Vogue magazine that he has no plans to quit the show regardless of his now busy film career:
“If we can keep the quality up, I can’t imagine that I will ever get tired of being Sherlock. I’d love to play him as an old man.”
For fans who absolutely must get a dose of Sherlock this holiday season, the Sherlock Limited Edition Gift Set, featuring two busts and 55 hours of bonus features may be just the thing.

Can’t even wait for next day delivery? Here is a little taste of the Cumberbatch for the ladies and gents who just can’t get enough (like Arron)…
Such a gentleman!
