Avenger Assemble: Marvel Announces All-Female Avengers, A-Force

Marvel’s been quite the purveyor of change with diversity in super heroes: a black Captain American, a female Thor and strong LGBT characters have given Marvel a fiercely diverse voice in the world of comics. Keeping the momentum going, Marvel announced the A-Force, the newly christened all-female Avengers team.

After She-Hulk’s amazing solo-run in 2014, she’ll head up the new team accompanied by Medusa, Queen of the Inhumans, the nostalgic fan-boy favorite, Dazzler, Nicole Minoru, formerly known as Sister Grimm of The Runaways, and a new “cosmically powered” heroine named Singularity, as well as other unannounced additions.

The team’s arrival will help transition the Marvel multi-verse into the recently announced Secret Wars story arc.

The A-Force will be co-written by G. Willow Wilson, who re-booted Ms. Marvel as a Muslim teen, Kamala Khan, and Marguerite Bennett, who wrote Marvel’s Angela standalone; X-Men artist Jorge Molina will be responsible for the art.  Secret Wars is shaping up to be one of  the most epic shake-ups in Marvel history. What’s still in speculation is if the women from the Ultimate universe will be included in the new arc, as the Secret Wars will see multiple multi-verses collide. That would certainly make things interesting.

Either way, the A-Force is one of many books used to bait a new wave of female readers with titles such as Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Black Widow, the female incarnation of Thor and last year’s All-female X-Men. Culminate that with the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D roster, and Agent Carter, and it becomes blatantly obvious that Marvel wants fans to know, that women are just as capable of wearing cape and tights.

Some of the most dynamic characters in Marvel have included strong female supes, (e.g. the X-Men) so we have nothing but great expectations for the new book. Plus, who doesn’t love a little Dazzler in their lives? Are you in favor of the new line-up?
