Masters of the Universe: First Image From New Movie?

We haven’t seen much from the upcoming reboot of the Masters of the Universe series since we last heard that director Jon M. Chu was out in favor of Jem and the Holograms. We also heard that a script rewrite has been handed in by Jeff Wadlow, who directed Kick-Ass 2 and has been connected to a rumored X-Force film for over a year now.

The latest news from the reboot comes from DeVon Franklin, the SVP of Production for Columbia, who has kept the news on this film alive over the last few months. He revealed on Twitter what appears to be a legitimate title card for Masters of the Universe, which would make this the first official image from the film if it is confirmed.

It does seem surprising that we would have this image before even seeing a director confirmed, unless rumors that Wadlow would be taking the reins turn out to be true.

Most of us fondly remember both the Mattel line of toys and the original cartoon from the 1980s.

And who could forget the terribly awesome live-action film starring Dolph Lundgren and Courtney Cox? Which, if I’m being honest I loved, but it isn’t considered the best adaptation of the source material. While the film was originally set for a sequel, plans fell through and all production materials were then used for Jean-Claude Van Damme’s Cyborg.

There was also a more modern reboot of the animated series a few years back that fans enjoyed, and a number of comic series over the years.

For those that are unaware of the franchise, Masters of the Universe takes place on the planet Eternia, and follows the adventures of Prince Adam (AKA He-Man) and his fellow warriors for Castle Grayskull who fight against the forces of evil, usually against Skeletor or Hordak. The action adventure series tied in many fantasy themes with sci-fi elements that attracted a ton of fans, and brought in even more once She-Ra, the Princess of Power was added both to the toy line and received her own television show.

Hopefully this bit of news will be the first step in seeing more from the long-awaited adaptation, but until we have confirmation of director or even a star attached we’ll have to keep this project in limbo for now.

What are your thoughts on the released image? Is it legitimate? Are you excited to see another live-action adaptation of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe?
