Supergirl Trailer: CBS Offers Extended First Look

CBS just released a lengthy first look trailer for their upcoming DC Comics series, Supergirl.

CBS has released a nearly seven minute first look at their new series, as well as two new promotional photos and an official synopsis for Supergirl. The DC Comics adaptation stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Zor-El, Superman’s cousin, alongside Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant and Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen.

Check out the first look at the CBS series starring Melissa Benoist as the title character:

Now having seen the trailer, it does seem a little corny at times but DC has had a successful run of shows that have balanced a great sense of humor, tone and pacing. If they can make Grodd on The Flash a somewhat convincing creation on prime time television, I’m sure they can attribute that to Supergirl.

This lengthy trailer showcases some fun details such as Jimmy — Nope, wait! — That’s James Olsen now, a shot of Superman,  and hints of future villains Toyman and Cyborg Superman, all while being more than generous for the uninitiated. The show is bright, colorful and wears its earnestness on its sleeve and should be some welcome counter-programming to a couple of the dark, edgier comic-book adaptations on the small screen right now.

The photos released feature each of those three actors in their roles, including our first look at Benoist in the role of Kara Danvers, as well as some shots of Benoist in full-on flight.

The pilot episode of Supergirl was written by Ali Adler (No Ordinary Family) and Greg Berlanti (Arrow, The Flash). They will also executive produce along with Sarah Schechter and Warner Bros. TV.

Here is the official synopsis for the show which was picked up for series just recently.

SUPERGIRL is an action-adventure drama based on the DC Comics character Kara Zor-El (Melissa Benoist), Superman’s (Kal-El) cousin who, after 12 years of keeping her powers a secret on Earth, decides to finally embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be. Twelve-year-old Kara escaped the doomed planet Krypton with her parents’ help at the same time as the infant Kal-El. Protected and raised on Earth by her foster family, the Danvers, Kara grew up in the shadow of her foster sister, Alex (Chyler Leigh), and learned to conceal the phenomenal powers she shares with her famous cousin in order to keep her identity a secret. Years later at 24, Kara lives in National City assisting media mogul and fierce taskmaster Cat Grant (Golden Globe Award winner Calista Flockhart), who just hired the Daily Planet’s former photographer, James Olsen (Mehcad Brooks), as her new art director. However, Kara’s days of keeping her talents a secret are over when Hank Henshaw (David Harewood), head of a super-secret agency where her sister also works, enlists her to help them protect the citizens of National City from sinister threats. Though Kara will need to find a way to manage her newfound empowerment with her very human relationships, her heart soars as she takes to the skies as Supergirl to fight crime.

Supergirl will debut in November and air Mondays at 8 p.m., potentially up against Gotham unless FOX’s Monday schedule changes.
