SPECTRE: New Trailer and Sam Mendes’ Future with 007

James Bond is back this November, and he’s bringing the 1960s with him.

Fans of the early Bond catalog will recognize the title of the movie, SPECTRE being the evil organization that so often faced off against the Sean Connery era 007. A return to the classic era villains is a welcome and exciting change, and Christoph Waltz seems a perfect fit to usher them back in. Just look at his Blofeld-esqe Nehru-style jacket!

So not only is the villainous organization a throwback to the 1960s, but they even grabbed the music from one of the forgotten classics. From the 1:45 mark on, the new trailer pays homage to 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.

Other throwbacks here include Waltz’s character Franz Oberhauser sharing a name with a German ski instructor, Hannes Oberhauser. Hannes appeared in the novel Octopussy as the man who taught James Bond mountain climbing, and who our hero would look to as a father figure. Also in the trailer, the Mexico City sequence bares close resemblance to the Mardi-Gras scene in 1965’s Thunderball. Easter eggs all over the place.

As for the new film, which is still a few months out, it’s said to be director Sam Mendes’ last Bond flick. The American Beauty director helmed Skyfall, which we loved, but told BBC News that he’s done now.

“I said no to the last one and then ended up doing it, and was pilloried by all my friends, but I do think this is probably it.”

He previously backed out of Spectre too, but changed his mind. Probably more likely to stick this time around. Who takes the helm next is a mystery, but we’re open to suggestions in the comment section if you have them.

November 6 is the US release date for SPECTRE. In addition to Christoph Waltz, and the obvious return of Daniel Craig and several others, the franchise will welcome new comers Monica Bellucci, Léa Seydoux, Dave Bautista, and Sherlock‘s Andrew Scott.
