Spider-Man Reboot Lands Writing Duo, Hilarity To Follow?

Could we finally see a funny Spidey in the MCU? And can it be sooner rather than later?

I know, I know, we all were hoping to see some sort of Spidey tease in Ant-Man, despite knowing there was no way that would happen. That just goes to show how intensely excited we are to see Spidey finally arrive in the MCU. We’ve had a few big announcements about the upcoming reboot, not the least of which was the casting of Tom Holland in the role of Peter Parker following an intense search by the studios.

Today we will discuss the most recent news, as the writers of the as-yet-unnamed Spider-Man reboot have been announced. John Francis Daley (Freaks and Geeks’ Sam Weir) and Jonathan M. Goldstein will script our first adventure with the new Spidey, which gives us a bit of insight into the direction the reboot will take.

Daley and Goldstein have been making a name for themselves in comedy lately, having written Horrible Bosses, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2, and most recently the duo wrote and directed the upcoming Vacation starring Ed Helms and Christina Applegate.

What we can infer from their hiring is that the new Spider-Man is going to be something we haven’t really seen throughout five films – FUNNY. Maybe even lose a bit of the darkness.

Now don’t get me wrong. Peter Parker/Spider-Man is a tragic character, right up there with Batman. However, while Batman broods in his cave and punches things, Spidey uses his humor to overcome his own particular tragedies. This is a side we didn’t really see in Raimi’s version at all, and was briefly attempted at with Webb’s reboot series. Not to rip on Tobey McGuire or Andrew Garfield, but McGuire cried better than he told jokes, and Garfield’s quips always felt a little too forced, with a couple genuinely humorous lines. They at least got the science nerd aspect right though.

Hopefully Daley and Goldstein can inject the right amount of comedy into Spidey’s usually tragic tale so we can finally hear the best quips in the superhero business. The Marvel Studios/Sony co-produced reboot will be directed by Jon Watts, who actually beat out the writing duo when they were all up for the directing gig.

The only other piece of news we have to report from the reboot came to us during CCI: SD, when it was announced that Marisa Tomei will be taking over the role of the queen of the wheatcake, Aunt May.

This came as a bit of a surprise considering the past actresses in the role, but younger Spidey equals younger Aunt May, right? Besides, we’d watch Marisa Tomei in pretty much anything.

What do you think of Marvel taking a more comedic path for the Spidey reboot? Thoughts on Marisa Tomei as Aunt May? Let us know in the comments section below!
