It’s been nearly two weeks since the boast-worthy Fox panel took place at San Diego Comic Con, where the film giant went into details about X-Men: Apocalypse, Gambit, Fantastic Four and Deadpool films. While fans are still waiting on Gambit and Deadpool details, the buzz for X-Men: Apocalypse began shortly after and hasn’t slowed down.
Last week, Entertainment Weekly released a first look into the set of the mutant dystopian film, with Olivia Munn’s Psylocke, Michael Fassbender’s Magneto and Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse gracing the cover in full costume.
Shortly following the leak of the Comic Con exclusive trailer, the fan feedback has been polarizing and resonant. Along with the three aforementioned mutants (Both Magneto and Psylocke serving as two of the four Horseman of Apocalypse), Fox and Entertainment Weekly released pictures of the majority of the mutant cast including; Storm, Nightcrawler, Jean Grey, Cyclops and Jubilee. Some of the mutants are pretty spot on. Such is the case with newcomer Lauren Condor as Jubilee. Others are getting waves of harsh criticisms, such as Alexandra Shipp’s Storm (Though I’d have to admit her hair is styled wonderfully in the fashion of ’80s punk Storm.) and Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse costume.
Costume critiques aside, there are things that look promising for the franchise. Singer’s latest Instagram post shows a decimated Cairo Egypt, no doubt the catastrophic aftermath of Storm and her uncontrollable powers. From the looks of the set, and the character roster, Apocalypse could be true to the origins of the comics, something this franchise is in dire need of.

Fans are hopeful to what is now a new cinematic universe forming by the hand of Fox studios. Bryan Singer commented recently in an interview with Yahoo on the idea of a Fantastic Four and X-Men crossover.
“Those ideas are in play.That would be a natural match-up because they’re both ensemble films and there is a natural mechanism by which to do it.”
Along with the Gambit and Deadpool films slated for future lineup, Fox is clearly developing a universe akin to Marvel’s and DC’s, though it’s debatable if this is in the best interest of their characters; especially since the X-Men franchise focuses more on their male leads than the bulk of their character roster. It’s a testament that some franchises are still getting the hang of this superhero thing.
