In recent months Marvel has been instrumental in keeping many of us Star Wars fans sane as we impatiently await the release of The Force Awakens. The various comics they’ve issued thus far like Darth Vader, Kanan: The Last Padawan and Lando have been fantastic and they look to continue that trend with this October’s Chewbacca #1. That’s right! Everyone’s favorite Wookiee is getting his own spin-off tale!
Chewbacca #1, like many of the other Star Wars comics Marvel has released so far, will be set shortly after the destruction of the first Death Star. Stranded and separated from the rest of the rebels and on a planet under the Empire’s control, he and a local girl will have to band together in an effort to take on the Imperials on the planet and to get Chewie back to the Rebellion.
Now, you might be curious or even skeptical as to how a comic centered on Kashyyyk’s most notorious co-pilot will work when you consider that Chewie communicates solely through various grunts and roars that are unintelligible to us. Understandably so as it surely presents an interesting challenge for the team handling the series.
The aforementioned team consists of writer Gerry Duggan and artist Phil Noto so it looks like we’re in good hands. Duggan has handled some pretty notable comics, perhaps the most important of which to us as Star Wars fans would be Hulk, considering the giant green rage monster doesn’t exactly do a whole lot talking just like our Wookiee warrior. Additionally, we can expect the same kind of stellar artwork that the new Star Wars comics have featured as Noto has been involved in several of Marvel’s recent forays into the Star Wars galaxy.
Chewbacca #1 is slated to hit shelves at your favorite comic shop on October 14 and as you can see, there are a bunch of awesome variant covers.
And f you’re interested in other Star Wars comics, perhaps you should check out the new Princess Leia stuff, or if you missed it – Dark Horse adapted Lucas’ original script into comic form. It’s a different look.
