New Ghostbusters Movie Chock Full Of Cameos

Ghostbusters fans have been on a roller coaster of emotions the last few years with rumors of a potential third film, and now the ride has reached a new level. Next year’s Ghostbusters reboot has fans cautiously optimistic, because it may be amazing. But what if it’s terrible?

Recent news on the project may go far to rest fans fears. One of the major issues facing those who wanted to recreate the adventure, key among them Dan Aykroyd (Ray Stanz) and the late, great Harold Ramis (Egon Spengler), was fellow co-star Bill Murray (Peter Venkman). Murray has long been the hold out, committed to waiting for a script that felt right.

Just last year Murray spoke to Variety on the announcement of the reboot,

” What they really want to do is resurrect a franchise. The first one was a spectacular movie, one of the greatest movies. The second one was”–Murray makes an unimpressed sound. “It had some moves. It had a few good scenes in it.” adding ”  “I read one that Danny [Aykroyd] wrote that was crazy bizarre and too crazy to comprehend,”

And now? Well, should fans consider the fact that Murray,has agreed to appear, at the very least in a cameo, as a sign the new reboot will be worth the watch? The movies screenplay was penned by Katie Dipold, best known for The Heat, and will be directed by Paul Feig (Bridesmaids, The Heat).

Murray will appear alongside original cast members  Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, (Winston Zeddemore), Annie Potts (Janine Melnitz), and most recently;

The appearance of the original cast, exciting though it may be, only opens the door to the movies potential. If Murray read a script that he felt was true to the glory of the original, what can we expect of the cast of modern-day comedic powerhouses?

The film seems to be following a tried and true comedic setup. Lead actress Kristine Wiig will take on a role similar to Murray’s Venkman. Like Murray, Wiig’s Irreverence makes her a great choice for the lead. Co-star Melissa McCarthy will take on a leadership role within the ‘Busters, perhaps much like Egons science driven role in the original. A smarter, more authoritative role for McCarthy, who recently showed her chops in Spy, could really be something to see. Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones finish out the crew, with Chris Hemsworth running the desk.

Andy Garcia will also join the cast as the New York City Mayor, Neil Casey will be our primary villain, Matt Walsh, Michael K. Williams, and Cecily Strong also appear.

Ghostbusters premieres July 22nd, 2016.
