If you haven’t seen it yet, we’ve got the first official trailer for Bone Tomahawk, the “horror western” starring Kurt Russell that premiered at Fantastic Fest back at the end of September.
Check out the trailer below:
Written and directed by Craig S. Zahler, making his feature directing debut, and starring Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Matthew Fox, David Arquette, and Richard Jenkins, the story follows a sheriff who must gather up a pose to venture out into the unknown to rescue a woman kidnapped by cannibals.
The film is described as a ‘horror western,’ which isn’t as difficult as it may sound to pull-off. Both genre’s deal in stark landscapes, often heightened by an unseen enemy hiding in plain sight, and both genre’s deal in violence (often brutal. and in the case of Bone Tomahawk, gory). It should have enough of either to appease both Horror and Western fans alike.
During an interview about Bone Tomahawk, Russell recently made a comparison to another survival horror film we here at GB are pretty fond of, John Carpenter’s The Thing:
“They’re not villains. It’s like when we did The Thing in 1982 – when we did the remake, that movie was about paranoia. It wasn’t about a horrific being. Because that thing had been to a number of different planets and it was just trying to survive. It looked horrific to us, and that was a tale of horror. This is running into a culture and situation that you are just not prepared for. They’re just out there hunting. When that guy gets – that one killing that everybody talks about – they’re just going to work. These guys have come to the wrong place. To us… it’s terrifying because you’re coming up against something you just can’t do anything about.”
Kurt Russell seems very busy in the saddle as of late. He will later appear around Christmas time in Quentin Tarantino’s highly anticipated Western epic The Hateful Eight.
Bone Tomahawk opens in limited release, iTunes and VOD on October 23rd, which is tomorrow.
