New Star Trek Series to Stream in January 2017

When is Star Trek coming back to television?

The question has been raised since the last series, Star Trek Enterprise, ended its run in 2005 after four seasons. And the question not only gets raised each time the movies hit the big screen, but when that other space opera continues to Force its way into households, first through the Clone Wars animated series and currently via Rebels.

CBS Television Studios has finally answered the question. An unnamed Star Trek series will air sometime in January 2017. The preview episode will first be shown on the CBS television network. The rest of the series will then continue on the CBS All Access service. Only subscribers to the live streaming and video-on-demand platform will get to watch. While more than a few fans – like yours truly – are riled at the idea of having to shell out $5.99 a month to go where no one has gone before (again), it’s not that surprising. Currently all Star Trek reruns are on CBS All Access.

Marc DeBevoise, executive vice president and general manager over at CBS Digital Media states:

“This new series will premiere to the national CBS audience, then boldly go where no first-run Star Trek series has gone before – directly to its millions of fans through CBS All Access. We’ve experienced terrific growth for CBS All Access, expanding the service across affiliates and devices in a very short time. We now have an incredible opportunity to accelerate this growth with the iconic Star Trek, and its devoted and passionate fan base, as our first original series.”

Alex Kurtzman, who produced and co-wrote both the 2009 Star Trek movie and its sequel, Star Trek Into Darkness, is back and will be producing the new series. Otherwise, there is virtually nothing known about it at this time. That has not stopped fans from giving their opinions on forums and social media however. One of the more interesting – and far-fetched – theories is that the series would center around Worf, the Klingon Starfleet officer from the Next Generation and Deep Space Nine shows. A more popular thought is that the series will be set some time after the events in the movies. That’s how it worked with the Next Generation, which was set 75 years after the original series.
