War For The Planet of the Apes; What We Know Thus Far

The third installment of the Planet of the Apes reboot, War for the Planet of the Apes, started filming last month and director Matt Reeves tweeted out a set photo to mark the beginning of principal photography. Based on the motion capture suits worn by the actors in the shot points to them being apes, an apparent inverse of Charles Heston on the beach in Planet of the Apes back in 1968. Take a look.

Their keeping a tight lid on any kind of plot details so far, so not much is known about film yet, but that should change Sunday night.

Until then, what we do know can only really be derived from the casting announcements made in the lead up to the start of shooting. Andy Serkis is thankfully donning the mo-cap suit and reprising his role as Caesar for the next installment. As reported by Variety, Steve Zahn will also be playing one of the apes though we don’t know anything about the character as of now. When you consider many of his roles throughout his career however, he may very well be there to provide a bit of comic relief, but considering the title of the film and the tone of the previous two, it’s hard to imagine a role like that being anything other than minor.

On the human side we know that Woody Harrelson will be playing a character named “The Colonel,” the villain of the film, first reported by The Hollywood Reporter. It will be interesting to see what Harrelson will bring to the franchise as the human lead being the bad guy, especially considering that the past human leads have all been allied with Caesar. Gabriel Chavarria will also have a small role in the film but nothing has been disclosed as of now regarding his role.

The current reboot of the property was started with 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which was fantastic, then followed by the equally great Dawn of the Planet of the Apes in 2014, which was also directed by Reeves. War for the Planet of the Apes is slated to be released on July 14, 2017.

  1. Love the new POTA series. It doesn’t try to re-write or “re-imagine” the originals, but also pay homage to that series.

    1. I completely agree. I remember going into Rise with some trepidation just because the last attempted reboot done by Tim Burton and starring Mark Wahlberg was atrocious in my opinion but it was great and so was Dawn.
