TNT to Resurrect Tales From The Crypt with M. Night Shyamalan

Hello kiddies!

We’ve been hearing for years that the Cryptkeeper would be returning, and for years we’ve been met with disappointment. Back in 2011 rumors surfaced that a new version of the show was being shopped around, and they would be ditching the anthology format. That wasn’t really what we wanted, but if it meant the return of Tales From The Crypt, we’d of taken it. Alas, that fell through.

Now it would seem the show is on track to finally return, this time keeping the anthology concept as part of a new two-hour horror block on TNT. The part that seems to have people worried however, is the name attached to the project – M. Night Shyamalan.

Shyamalan is a bit of a controversial figure. He broke out strong in 1999 with the Oscar nominated The Sixth Sense, but his career aimed in a mostly downward angle in the years since.

More recently however, his foray into television proved entertaining as a producer on Wayward Pines.  The 2010 movie Devil, for which he came up with the story, was a fun watch, and his latest film – The Visit (he wrote and directed) was fairly well received by horror fans. So maybe our worry is misplaced. Lady in the Water and The Happening were a long time ago, perhaps this could his redemption?

“To be part of such a beloved brand like Tales From the Crypt, something I grew up watching, and to also have the chance to push the boundaries of genre television as a whole, is an inspiring opportunity that I can’t wait to dive into,”

He seems excited. And I’ll be more excited when I hear them confirm John Kassir will reprise his role at the Cryptkeeper. For those of you who don’t know, the Cryptkeeper’s origins date back to EC Comics in 1949, where he, along with the Vault-Keeper and the Old Witch shared the tales that would eventually make up the HBO show where he was voiced by John Kassir.

TNT’s Kevin Reilly on the two-hour block;

 “It’s not a show, it’s an umbrella for what will hopefully be many shows. We’re going to put a variety of different genre shows…all united under the Tales from the Crypt brand. Night is definitely going to direct the first one and we’ll see how that evolves. And we’re definitely going to utilize the underlying comics.”

We’re genre fans around here, so that all sounds good to us. Be sure to check back here in the future for more news on Tales from the Crypt as it develops!
