Wonder Woman Updates and Casting News, And Why We Won’t See Lynda Carter

It’s been a couple of months since we checked in on Wonder Woman, and with her recent debut in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, it seemed like the perfect time to see how things were going with her 2017 solo feature.

Back in January we were treated to some snippets, but we haven’t seen much since then. That is until Warner Bros. (through Entertainment Weekly) released a new promotional shot of the Amazons…

From left to right we see our hero and the three women who raised and trained her; Norwegian actress Lisa Loven Kongsli as Menalippe, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince / Wonder Woman, Connie Nielsen (Rushmore, Gladiator) as Queen Hippolyta, and Robin Wright (The Princess Bride, House of Cards) playing General Antiope.

The movie, directed by Patty Jenkins of Monster fame, would seem to split time between the Amazon home of Themyscira, and ‘man’s world’ during the first World War. That would put it nearly a century before her character shows up in BvS. As Geoff Johns explained previous, it was originally the role of the Amazons to protect mortal humans, but they long ago abandoned that duty as mortals were thought to not be worth the effort. Apparently Diana thought differently and here we’ll see her join the fray.

And while BvS is getting panned by most critics, Gadot’s Wonder Woman seems to have been almost universally appreciated as the highlight of the film. That makes her solo venture the most anticipated thing on Warner Bros. upcoming schedule. And Gadot herself seems genuinely pumped about the role…

As for the original WW, Glamour recently spoke with Lynda Carter and learned that there were discussions about her playing the role of Queen Hippolyta (which would have been perfect) before Nielsen was cast.

GLAMOUR: What was your reaction when you heard about Wonder Woman’s cinematic debut?

CARTER: I’m glad to see that a woman, Patty Jenkins, is going to direct. I was talking to Patty about maybe playing Wonder Woman’s mother, but because of my singing career and the upcoming tour dates, it didn’t come together. But I wish both she and Gal the very, very best!

Aside from the ladies listed above, the cast will also feature Chris Pine (Star Trek), David Thewlis, (Harry Potter), Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead), Ewen Bremner (AVP, Snatch), and Danny Huston (30 Days of Night).

Wonder Woman is set for release on June 23, 2017.
