The first trailer for The Girl On The Train starring Emily Blunt and adapted from Paula Hawkins’ bestselling mystery novel has just dropped and it’s filled sex, violence, and mystery!

The film gives off a tone reminiscent but still distinct from David Fincher’s Gone Girl. The novel drew comparisons to Gillian Flynn’s book as well. As for what’s shown in the trailer, it would seem right at home as a stalwart ’90s thriller. It was a nice audible touch for the trailer to feature a [ominous] remixed version of Kanye West’s Heartless, adding just the right amount of seediness and familiarity.
Directed by Tate Taylor (The Help) and based on the bestselling novel by Paula Hawkins, The Girl on the Train follows Rachel (Blunt), an alcoholic who’s still reeling from her divorce. Every day on her daily commute, she passes by a perfect-looking couple and fantasizes about what their lives must be like — until one morning when she witnesses something she wasn’t supposed to.
Emily Blunt continues her rise as an incredibly reliable movie star who can also act. Splitting her time between films like The Huntsman: Winter’s War and more adult-indie fare like Sicario shows just what kind of filmography she’s carved for herself lately. Blunt could very well elevate this thriller into something special.
One distinct difference noticeable in the trailer from Hawkins’ mystery novel is that the unreliable narrator is, in fact, that way because she is a drunk. Very little of that revelation is given in the trailer, but will surely come into play as it permeates the novel with such intensity that it could very well become a different kind of narrative (tonally anyway) than the story so many readers pined over.
In addition to Emily Blunt starring as troubled protagonist Rachel, the film also stars Justin Theroux, Rebecca Ferguson, Haley Bennett and Allison Janney. The screenplay was adapted by Erin Cressida Wilson.
The Girl On The Train hits theaters on October 7.
