The Weinstein Company debuted the first trailer for McDonald’s biopic The Founder, starring Michael Keaton and Laura Dern, and directed by John Lee Hancock.
Check out the first trailer for The Founder below:
The film follows salesman Ray Kroc, who made McDonald’s into a billion dollar chain and one of the most powerful brands in the world. Kroc buys into the business of McDonald’s actual founders, Dick and Mac McDonald (Nick Offerman and John Carroll Lynch). Kroc later battles the brothers for control of their chain, and their innovative fast food technology.
The Founder looks to be another success in the career renaissance of Michael Keaton. Starring in two consecutive Best Picture winners (Birdman and Spotlight), as well as receiving an Oscar nomination for Best Actor (should have beat Redmayne).
Keaton started strong in the 80s with a successful run of comedies like Mr. Mom, Night Shift and Johnny Dangerously before becoming a major star with lead roles in two Tim Burton films: Beetlejuice and Batman. During the aughties, Keaton had trouble finding his footing, usually relegated to supporting work in lesser films. All of that changed when director Alejandro González Iñárritu and a little movie called Birdman came along. Now, it seems like Keaton can’t be stopped, and would we really want him to anyway?
In addition to the trailer, TWC has also released the film’s first poster which has pop-art meets grit feel, perfect for its period setting.
Hancock is working from a screenplay by Big Fan and The Wrestler screenwriter Robert Siegel, who was also the former editor-in-chief of The Onion. The film is also notable for its producing giant, Harvey Weinstein who is already looking to position The Founder for awards contention this fall:
“The Founder is brilliant and one of the most controversial films I have had the pleasure to be associated…The story of Ray Kroc should ignite adult audiences this summer and send the incredible team of John Lee Hancock and Michael Keaton back to the Dolby Theater.”
The movie was originally set for release on November 25, but The Weinstein Co. will now release The Founder in theaters on August 5, 2016.

The Founder just opened in Sydney and it is a brilliant film, certain to be mentioned at the Oscars. Excellent casting, directing and period sets make this a thoroughly engaging story. But its a bit like finding out Santa Claus is Satan in disguise; a very negative take on Ray Kroc.
