If you’re a horror or zombie fan at all, you’ve had the conversation. Where would you go, what weapons would you bring, and who would be on your zombie apocalypse team? While it seems far-fetched, planning for zombies might be the best way to get people ready for nature’s real-life worst.

While the increase of natural disasters and recent news of floods and earthquakes fail to garner the nation’s attention, millions tune in to watch The Walking Dead each week. So instead of trying to compete with entertainment, the CDC has chosen to join right in.
The CDC has published a graphic novel, titled Preparedness 101: Zombie Pandemic, available for free on their home site, CDC.com. The novella follows two survivors and their dog, and is written with the intent of driving home the fact that even though there aren’t zombies, it is important to be prepared.
While the idea of planning for a zombie uprising started as a joke, the CDC realized that not only was it a new and exciting way to educate, but it was a very effective platform for disaster preparedness.
The number of natural disasters has nearly quadrupled over the last twenty years. A death toll of nearly 70, 000 people a year is attributed to volcanoes, tsunamis, earthquakes, tornadoes, hurricanes, mudslides, and other natural disasters. A population woefully under educated, and unprepared for pretty much any disaster has driven others to jump on the zombie band wagon. The Department of Homeland Security and FEMA have all begun using the zombie apocalypse as an add campaign to get people thinking about being prepared. The Pentagon even got into the game with a plan of their own, which you can read here, though it might not leave you feeling any safer.
During any major disaster, the situations would be similar. Key among your main concerns would be access to power, clean water, shelter and food, which would all be affected in any disaster. The CDC lays out the basics and there’s an infographic PDF!
Of course, for hardcore zombie-philes, this list leaves off those two important questions, what is your weapon?
And who is in your dream team?
