“In Norse mythology, Ragnarök is a series of future events, including a great battle, foretold to ultimately result in the death of a number of major figures (including the gods Odin, Thor, Týr, Freyr, Heimdallr, and Loki), the occurrence of various natural disasters, and the subsequent submersion of the world in water.”
While Thor: Ragnarök still is a while away, there have been several updates recently, all following rumors of some hiccups in production. Around the beginning of the year we reported about the rumored, now confirmed, casting of Cate Blanchett as Hela the Goddess of Death. Mark Ruffalo is also confirmed as he reprises his role as Bruce Banner.
Additionally, Jeff Goldblum (Independence Day), has joined the cast as the Grandmaster. The Grandmaster name sounds much more domineering than his comic portrayal actually consists of. While I assume his character will have some sort of hand in the overall villain plot, the Grandmaster is known for doing as he pleases and playing with people, often making them fight for his own entertainment. Karl Urban (Star Trek) has also joined the cast as Skurge, a long time rival of Thor who wields an enchanted axe.
In an interesting bit of news to the story, we are happy to report that the Planet Hulk armor is not only going to make an appearance in a gladiator-like situation set up by the Grandmaster, but Thor: Ragnarök will also include much of the famous Planet Hulk storyline. How this will play out is up for speculation, as the Hulk seemed to leave Earth willingly after Avengers: Age of Ultron, which contradicts the comic book storyline.
Alternatively, we do see an addition to Team Thor as well. Tessa Thompson (Creed, Veronica Mars) will be portraying Valkyrie, an Asgardian hero who will most likely join Thor’s ranks in order to defeat this incredible line-up of baddies.
Chris Hemsworth will obviously be returning as Thor, and he is joined by fellow returning cast members Tom Hiddleston (Loki), Idris Elba (Heimdall), and Anthony Hopkins as Odin.
Thor: Ragnarok is set to hit theaters November 3, 2017.
