Mortal Kombat Creator Could Create Horror Icons Video Game

Horror movie characters like Freddy, Jason and the rest have managed to span numerous genres, not just the cinematic universes they were originally born into.

Jason Voorhees for example has his own video game currently in the works, plus old Spectrum and NES games from the 1980s, as well as a board game (called Last Friday) inspired by his murderous antics. And he is not alone.

Freddy Kruger, Leatherface and sparring enemies Predator and the Alien Xenomorph have all appeared in their own games. In fact, they all even teamed up to star in the latest Mortal Kombat games. Freddy appeared in the 2011 release, while the rest pop up in Mortal Kombat X (thanks to IHorror for the roundup of these fiendish characters) as downloadable content.

If you missed them here are a few videos showcasing their moves in the video game.

So any news of more video game content like this is going to get gamers and movie fans alike a little giddy. Game Informer had an interesting chat with Mortal Kombat developer Ed Boon who has obviously been entertaining the idea of these characters appearing in more games as he had this to say.

Yes, yes! You know, as we’ve been accumulating them, that idea has been coming up more and more frequently.

The fans have also let him know how much they would like to see a game with more horror icons in it, maybe along the lines of Mortal Kombat’s own designs.

You brought it up and a few other people have brought it up like ‘why don’t you do a horror movie fighting game?’ Maybe one day we’ll do it.

Now stuff like this is to be taken with a grain of salt (read about the on / off development of the Dredd sequel to see what I mean). But with some of these characters already inserted in the Mortal Kombat game quite fluidly, it seems the natural progression of this would be to get them all together in some kind of punch up. They managed to do it with the DC universe and Marvel vs Capcom games prove we love beating the crap outta famous characters.

Gaming fans could have their cake and eat it here because as many a gamer knows there is already an unofficial fan game like this on the market. Called Terror Drome, and this game has all your favorite horror stars going full at it in some great action scenes and fun death move style combos. Fun to play, and with some great character designs this is a must have game to play for fans of the Mortal Kombat genre.

So if Ed Boon and company do decide to crack on with a game of their own, there are some high standards already out there. But if the graphics of the new Mortal Kombat game are anything to go by, they will be able to create some stunning versions of these characters, as well as some fun gameplay along the way. I like to think game fans would be more than happy to embrace two games showcasing horror film monsters having a ruckus with each other.

While you wait, you can always check out the reviews of the fantastic series Mortal Kombat Legacy.  Mortal Kombat X star Jason Voorhees seems to pop up all over the place. Films, Games and Toys! Here is a collection of some awesome (and in some cases very odd) collectibles. And finally speaking of collectibles, Chainsaw Estate has a full house of horror oddities.
