The 91st Oscar nominations were announced this morning in a presentation by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. We have the full list of all the most noteworthy people and films up for the coveted Academy Award.
There was a bit of history made today as 10 years after Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight forced a significant paradigm shift at the Oscars, a superhero movie was finally nominated for best picture. That’s right, Marvel’s Black Panther scored the first nomination for such a film. With $700 million at the domestic box office, Ryan Coogler’s hit film became the third-highest grossing film of all time in the States. Worldwide it has accumulated north of $1.3 billion. Its nomination makes it the third-highest grossing best picture nominee ever, behind James Cameron’s Avatar and Titanic.
In August, the AMPAS said it would roll out a “popular film” award as a way to connect with audiences, and that idea was quickly shelved due to an overwhelming amount of negative criticism. Many wondered if the category would be seen as a consolation prize for acclaimed films such as Black Panther that might not earn best picture nominations, but instead, the Academy ended up with something of a compromise by just including more “mainstream” movies in the usually under-seen movies nominated for the larger categories.
That’s not to say there weren’t a lot of Art-house fare nominated. Check out the Best Director category which found two foreign language directed films being thrown into the mix, including favorite-to-win Alfonso Cuarón.
As there is any year, of course, there were snubs. Bringing up Black Panther once again, many have said for such a ferocious blockbuster why would its director, Ryan Coogler, not earn a nomination? Additionally, many have pointed out Michael B. Jordan’s supporting performance as Killmonger was enough to warrant an interesting choice for the category. But expanding beyond the Marvel snubs, there were considerable films and people who were hot going into the Oscar race that seemed to have fallen by the wayside, including a wonderful documentary revolving around everyone’s favorite children’s program host, Mr. Rogers. Won’t You Be My Neighbor was shunned from the Best Documentary category altogether, even though it’s cleaned up in many other races.
But perhaps the biggest surprise of all was Bradley Cooper. Even though the star earned two Nominations (for producing A Star Is Born, along with Adapted Screenplay) many pundits placed him as almost guaranteed choice for the Best Director category. No dice, Mr. Cooper. The film ended up earning eight nominations altogether, including two for its star, Lady Gaga (Best Song and Best Actress).
In the end, Alfonso Cuarón’s memory movie Roma and Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite led the way 10 nominations apiece. Followed by Warner Bros’ A Star Is Born and Annapurna Pictures’ Vice, both with eight, and joining Roma and The Favourite in a diverse Best Picture race that has been shaping up all awards season.
