Birds of Prey: First Teaser Reveals Colorful Direction Set to Haunting Music

We’re still more than a year out from the release of Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn), but we’ve already got a teaser and a new picture directly from star Margot Robbie.

The short 20-second teaser is set to Moderat’s “A New Error,” which could be an ominous sign of things to come, or a playful jab at fans who consider Suicide Squad  – the last movie to star Harley Quinn – to have been one big mistake.  Either way, this video doesn’t give much away in terms of dialogue or story, but it does show some quick flashes of the players.

Aside from Quinn herself, you’ll see glimpses of The Huntress, Black Mask, Victor Zsasz, Black Canary, and Cassandra Cain. Enjoy!

Site favorite Mary Elizabeth Winstead is seen here, wielding a crossbow as Huntress. You will recognize Winstead from films such as Death Proof, 10 Cloverfield Lane, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and Live Free or Die Hard as John McClane’s daughter Lucy. I love this casting choice. More recently, she (brilliantly) played opposite of Ewan McGregor in the third season of Fargo on FX.

Speaking of McGregor, he’s been cast as the primary villain here, adopting the moniker of Black Mask, one of the last really substantial Bat-villains to make it to the live-action big screen. The other villain shown in the teaser is Chris Messina (The Newsroom) as deranged serial killer and Arkham regular Victor Zsasz.

Friday Night Lights‘ Jurnee Smollett-Bell will play classic Justice League member Black Canary, the only one of the Birds with actual superpowers. Rounding out the team, newcomer Ella Jay Basco is our Cassandra Cain. Cassandra, one of the most underrated of all the Batgirls, played a pivotal role in DC Comics’ “No Man’s Land” story arc, as Batman and company attempted to retake Gotham City following an Earthquake. It’s great to see her included in the movies.

In addition to the teaser, Robbie also released a shot of her in full costume on Instagram, which you can see below;
