Netflix has released the first full trailer for their new original anime series, Ultraman. Netflix announced the series last fall and dropped a teaser trailer but this new full trailer is making the series look even better.
Produced by Production I.G and Sola Digital Arts, and directed by both Shinji Aramaki and Kenji Kamiyama, this new Ultraman series follows Shinjiro Hayata, a high-school student who must don the Ultra Suit and the worries that come with it. The son of the former Ultraman, he will become this generation’s new hero!

The trailer reveals that this series is set a few years after the original 1960 Ultraman series. As Shinjiro takes over his father’s role and fuses with what is known as the “giant of light” to transform into Ultraman just in time for a new set of invading aliens to arrive on Earth. The series will also feature other types of Ultraman who ultimately struggle to accept Shinjiro as the new mantle holder. The new series acts a sequel to the original Ultraman live-action series, with appearances from some updated familiar foes in addition to a new set of villains.
As for the talent behind the scenes, Ultraman is directed by two noteworthy directors. Aramaki has been behind many much-loved Japanese properties, such as Harlock and Appleseed, as well as garnering the attention of Microsoft, going on to be the chief director for the Halo Legends series. Kamiyama, on the other hand, started out in the industry working on films like Akira and Kiki’s Delivery Service before going on to work on Jin-Roh, Patlabor, and Blood: The Last Vampire. Later, he directed the Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex anime television series, which was followed on into a second season, and a TV movie, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex – Solid State Society. Aramaki will next direct the initial season of Blade Runner – Black Lotus, an anime for Cartoon Network and Crunchyroll.
Considering how popular CG animated series such as Knights of Sidonia have been on Netflix, Ultraman is likely to be another popular hit for the streaming giant. Judging by the CG heavy production of this new show here’s hoping this won’t be the only animation style for Netflix’s growing 2019 anime line-up, which includes new and old series, including the highly-anticipated debut of Neon Genesis Evangelion. Ultraman is already a phenomenon, spawning dozens of sequels, spin-offs, rip-offs, imitators, parodies, and tributes, and turning Ultraman into a Japanese pop culture icon. Here’s to this new series continuing that legacy.
