Anthony Russo Reveals Which MCU Movies To Watch Before Avengers: Endgame

Marvel’s Avengers: Endgame isn’t far off. With just weeks to go, many fans are probably planning a re-watch of the entire MCU up until this point, but if you don’t have time for that,  Anthony Russo has got you covered.

Some of us live busy lives, or just don’t have the patience, so one of the co-directors of the film have made it all easier for us by pinpointing a small, select group of films one should see before going into Endgame. How will the remaining heroes find a way to save the day now that half the universe has disappeared thanks to Thanos’ snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War?

In an interview recently with Fandango, co-director Anthony Russo explains that although “people who haven’t seen anything [can still enjoy the movie]” there are two touchstones that one should get another viewing of before Avengers: Endgame rolls around. “I would say, certainly, Civil War and Infinity War are probably the two biggest lead-ins to this movie.” As for Winter Soldier, well that just seems to be because it’s where the Russo brothers entered the MCU so naturally, it’s where they begin to tell their arch. And, of course, you’re going to need to watch every previous Avengers movie beforehand. However, Captain America: Civil War is an interesting choice but Russo says it’s because “[Civil] War created the situation where the Avengers were divided.” Judging from that final trailer, it looks like that divide will be sewn back courtesy of Cap and Tony’s heartfelt handshake.

Again, those essentials, according to Anthony Russo, are:

  • The Avengers (2012)
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
  • Captain America: Civil War (2016)
  • Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

So, how will the remaining heroes save the day? Based on what little has been revealed up until this point, the characters will have to find a way to bring back those we lost. How they will go about doing that remains one of the biggest mysteries at the heart of Avengers: Endgame. However, given the record-breaking ticket sales for the film, it looks like almost everyone on the planet will find out opening weekend.

A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth installment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.

Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, confirmed cast members for the untitled fourth Avengers film so far include Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Don Cheadle, Sean Gunn, Paul Rudd, Brie Larson, Karen Gillan, Katherine Langford, and Josh Brolin.

Avengers: Endgame hits theaters Thursday night, April 25th.
