Domino Trailer: De Palma’s Troubled New Thriller Starring Nikolaj Coster-Waldau

After a number of delays, Brian De Palma’s new crime drama Domino will finally be released this May in theaters and VOD, and there’s a premiere trailer to prove it.

Written by Petter Skavlan, the thriller stars Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as a cop trying to track down the ISIS member who killed his partner. Carice van Houten, Coster-Waldau’s fellow Game of Thrones cast member, also stars in the film, along with Guy Pearce.

Judging by this first (and likely only) trailer for the film, Domino looks like standard VOD thriller material. It still has flashes of its stylish and lauded director. Within the first minute or so we get one of De Palma’s signature split diopter shots, a technique that he didn’t invent but certainly utilized to near perfection in many of his films. However, as mentioned before, this has been one troubled production to get up on screens.

In an in-depth interview with Le Point, De Palma has already expressed his complicated relationship with his new film. “I had a lot of problems in financing [Domino]. I never experienced such a horrible movie set. A large part of our team has not even been paid yet by the Danish producers. The film is finished and ready to go out, but I have no idea what its future will hold, it is currently in the hands of the producers. This was my first experience in Denmark and most likely my last.”

There has been a lot of word of mouth over the production of Domino with some saying the film was originally 148 minutes along. However, the new version being released clocks in at just 89 minutes, likely due to all of the turmoil De Palma has been talking about. Alas, the film that was seemingly taken away by the producer and likely one De Palma is not going to do a lot of press for is finally coming out. The filmmaker’s name is still all over the promotional material, which indicates he might still have some involvement but look for Domino to probably fall by the wayside apart from some devoted cinephiles and curio-seekers.
