Child’s Play Trailer: Hear Mark Hamill Voice The Iconic Chucky

“Are We Having Fun Now?” Your new best friend is coming to play this June!

Orion Pictures has released the official trailer for their upcoming reboot of Child’s Play. Directed by Lars Klevberg and written by Tyler Burton Smith, the film is a new take on the beloved horror franchise set in the modern day that follows a single mother (Aubrey Plaza) who gives her young child a Buddi doll as a gift, unaware of its more sinister nature.

Check out the trailer for Child’s Play below:

Chucky, as played by Mark Hamill, is mostly kept in the shadows in this trailer (he was barely seen in the first trailer back in February). Not since the killer doll’s first foray back in 1988 has Chucky come across this ominous; it seems the filmmakers are returning to the darker side of the film’s plot. We also get our first look (or sound) of Chucky talking and what Hamill will be injecting into the iconic killer doll.

The trailer doesn’t give away too much but it’s surprising the amount of set-up footage that’s in this thing. Klevberg and co. are definitely going in a different direction than the 1988-launched franchise. Plaza’s character gives her son (as played by Gabriel Bateman) a Buddi doll for his birthday, much the same way the original was set-up. The doll carries a sinister nature, of course, and the footage only gives us a tease of Chucky’s new voice. However, we also get to see his origins. In the original 1988 film, Chucky, as played by Brad Dourif, was a serial killer named Charles Lee Ray who used a magic spell to thrust his soul into the Good Guys doll. In 2019, Buddi has a faulty A.I. chip deliberately placed in it by a manufacturing worker.

As previously reported, Mark Hamill would be filling the voice made iconic by Brad Dourif. Chucky is voiced by the veteran voice actor and Star Wars star and, indeed, many horror fans were mixed on the reboot given the franchise had been getting it’s footing again under creator Don Mancini. It was the casting of Hamill as the new Chucky (or Buddi) that at least kept many intrigued for this reboot. This new film is not connected to the original franchise nor the upcoming TV show called Chucky, though. This doll has a complete redesign that seems to take on a softer, more sleek look, something that might make his murderous tendencies all the more upsetting and unsettling.

The new version of the classic is produced by Seth Grahame-Smith and David Katzenberg, who also oversaw 2017’s It and that film’s upcoming sequel. “Child’s Play was, and is, one of my all-time horror movies and it was one of my introductions to horror,” Klevberg told EW last year. “I got the script [for the remake] and it was really really good, and I knew it was from the producers from It, and I jumped in immediately.” We’ll have to see just where they go with this new iteration, but the trailer is enough of a tease to keep us interested.

You can also check out the new poster for the film, which has Chucky looming large, brandishing a knife. It also makes the murderous doll look like a giant which is…Scarier..? I guess:
