Universal Pictures has released a brand new trailer for their upcoming Fast & Furious spinoff, Hobbs & Shaw starring Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham.
Written by Fast & Furious veteran screenwriter Chris Morgan and directed by Deadpool 2‘s David Leitch, Hobbs & Shaw finds the two hot-headed actions stars pitted against Idris Elba’s Brixton, a genetically enhanced mercenary terrorist who literally has bullet-proof skin and other super-powers.
Check out the new trailer for Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw below:
Joining Hobbs and Shaw is Shaw’s sister, played by Vanessa Kirby, who many action fans will know from last summer’s superb Mission: Impossible – Fallout. It almost looks like she’s playing an offset of that same character but we’ll look past that; character depth isn’t exactly why these movies are so popular. Helen Mirren, who appeared in a small [uncredited] cameo role in The Fate of the Furious as Deckard and Owen Shaw’s mother, is also back. Meanwhile, Johnson’s cousin Roman Reigns (a WWE star in his own right), along with Cliff Curtis, Josh Mauga, and John Tui, all co-star as Hobbs’ brothers.
Universal released the first trailer back at the start of February before showing off some fresh footage at this month’s CinemaCon, including clips of Brixton calling himself the “Black Superman” and waging a massive battle with Hobbs and his brothers on their home turf in Hawaii. Much of this new footage is now seen in the brand new, nearly four-minute long trailer.
The Fast & Furious franchise is now eight films deep and amassed nearly $5 billion worldwide. It was only going to be a matter of time before spinoffs were going to start popping up and the obvious choice was a vehicle for Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. The spin-off basically looks like the ultimate buddy cop movie, injected with an extra dose of steroids that keeps this franchise as bonkers and fun as it gets.
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw speeds into theaters this August 2.
