Crawl: First Trailer For Alex Aja And Sam Raimi’s Alligators In A Hurricane Horror

Paramount Pictures has unveiled the first official trailer for the summer horror movie Crawl, the latest from Alexandre Aja (High Tension, The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D). The film stars Kaya Scodelario and Barry Pepper as a daughter and father held up during a hurricane, fighting off a horde of very hungry alligators.

When a massive hurricane hits her Florida hometown, Haley (Kaya Scodelario) ignores evacuation orders to search for her missing father (Barry Pepper). Finding him gravely injured in the crawl space of their family home, the two become trapped by quickly encroaching floodwaters. As time runs out to escape the strengthening storm, Haley and her father discover that the rising water level is the least of their fears.

During the annual theater owner convention, CinemaCon, Paramount Pictures debuted the first footage for the film. Attendees likened what they saw to “47 Meters Down meets Jaws,” and calling the footage “bloody and chaotic.” They probably got to see a lot more than we do in this two-minute trailer but what we do see has us low-key excited.

Paramount has been delivery a mixed bag of horror films over the past year and a half. They’ve had everything from hits like A Quiet Place to misses like the dumped-on The Cloverfield Paradox. Even hitting the middle ground with mixed bags (both critically and commercially) with the likes of Overlord and the Pet Sematary remake.

Now the studio brings us Crawl from director Alexandre Aja and the film takes on a decidedly frighteningly current climate change context. However, this is the first time in almost a decade Aja has taken on such B-movie horror material considering his most recent films have been The 9th Life of Louis Drax and Horns two that pleasantly surprised many a fan but are a far cry from the furious blood and goo Aja was known for. Crawl could be a return to glorious, silly fun for the filmmaker.

The film is written by Shawn and Michael Rasmussen, who wrote John Carpenter’s last directorial effort The Ward. Crawl is produced by horror icon Sam Raimi, the man behind the Evil Dead franchise, and Craig Flores, known for films like 300.
