Well Go USA has released the first official trailer for the indie film Freaks, a post-apocalyptic sci-fi thriller that follows an over-bearing father trying to protect his daughter from a harsh world outside their windows.
Kept locked inside the house by her father, 7-year-old Chloe lives in fear and fascination of the outside world, where Abnormals create a constant threat – or so she believes. When a mysterious stranger offers her a glimpse of what’s really happening outside, Chloe soon finds that while the truth isn’t so simple, the danger is very real.

The trailer itself sets up a pretty standard horror film. We see a man trying to save his little kid from evil beyond their home. There’s a creepy ice cream truck and an imposing figure with a catchy nickname to go along with it: Mr. Snowcone.
However, as the trailer goes on and more footage is revealed Freaks takes a hard left into the realm of sci-fi and supernatural thriller, as events begin to unfold in spectacular fashion. The film juggles the ambiguity of its narrative until its final moments, casting an allegorical eye on the notion of diversity, fear of those different from us and an unsettling world likened to the works of Philip K. Dick. This is a fantastical film, conceived in small doses but one that feels larger than its budget would dictate.
The film stars Lexy Kolker as Chloe, Emile Hirsch as the Dad, Academy Award-nominated veteran actor Bruce Dern (The ‘burbs, Nebraska, The Hateful Eight) as Mr. Snowcone, Amanda Crew (Charlie St. Cloud) as Mary, Grace Park (Battlestar Galactica) as Agent Ray, Aleks Paunovic (Vendetta) as Robert Kraigen, Michelle Harrison as Nancy Reed and Ava Telek as Harper Reed. Freaks is co-written and co-directed by filmmakers Zach Lipovsky (Leprechaun: Origins, Dead Rising: Watchtower) & Adam B. Stein, two up-and-coming filmmakers who have made a few other acclaimed short films together before this.

First premiering back in September, 2018 at the Toronto International Film Festival before going on to the Sitges, Vancouver, Trieste, and Santa Barbara Film Festivals, Freaks will open in theaters on August 23, 2019.
