Knives Out Trailer: Rian Johnson Returns With A Star-Studded Whodunit

Lionsgate has released the first trailer for the new thriller Knives Out. Rian Johnson returns with a great assembled cast in a movie that promises to pay tribute to masterminds Agatha Christie and Alfred Hitchcock with his own modern-day murder-mystery.

When renowned crime novelist Harlan Thrombey is found dead at his estate just after his 85th birthday, the inquisitive and debonair Detective Benoit Blanc is mysteriously enlisted to investigate. From Harlan’s dysfunctional family to his devoted staff, Blanc sifts through a web of red herrings and self-serving lies to uncover the truth behind Harlan’s untimely death.

Check out the first trailer for Knives Out below:

The all-star ensemble cast of Knives Out includes Daniel Craig (Spectre), along with Chris Evans (Avengers: Endgame), Ana de Armas (Blade Runner 2049), Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water), Lakeith Stanfield (Sorry To Bother You), Don Johnson (Django Unchained), Toni Collette (Hereditary), Christopher Plummer (Beginners), Katherine Langford (Love, Simon), Riki Lindhome (Kidding), Edi Patterson (The Last O.G.), Raúl Castillo (Atypical), and Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween).

The trailer showcases just enough to entice viewers into Johnson’s latest endeavor after taking on a galaxy far far away. Johnson describes the movie as a modern-day American whodunnit, and it’s a joy to see the familial interplay here. Especially Chris Evans, who gets to play against type in his first big role after Avengers: Endgame. Here, he profanely gets to drag his family one-by-one and it’s the sort of upper-class snobbery that were so ample in Christie’s novels and subsequent riffs like the cult classic, Clue.

Knives Out

“The idea was to take everything I love about a great Agatha Christie story and put it into a new original story set in modern-day America,” says Johnson. “That’s kind of the essence of it.” During Lionsgate’s presentation at this past year’s CinemaCon, Johnson revealed that he is a die-hard Agatha Christie fan and that Knives Out was an attempt to take all the aspects he loved about the famed writer.

Johnson is attached to direct a new Star Wars trilogy after his work on The Last Jedi, which seemingly divided fans but earned universal critical acclaim and had many calling it one of the best Star Wars films ever made. Who knows, maybe Rian Johnson is out to ruin some delicate fans’ childhood love of knives now, too!
