HBO has released the first real trailer for creator Damon Lindelof’s Watchmen series based on the Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons graphic novel of the same name, debuting in October.
Watchmen marks Lindelof’s return to television following the end of his critically praised (if under-viewed) HBO drama The Leftovers, not to mention a return to more genre-focused television fare, following his defining work on ABC’s Lost. Starring Regina King, Jeremy Irons, and Don Johnson, Watchmen looks to feature several characters from the original graphic novel, even continuing their legacies. Among the eclectic cast of characters, we have the super-genius Adrian “Ozymandias” Veidt, who fans will remember “saved” the world by destroying New York City with an alien invasion that was actually a telepathic octopus. While Super-brutal Rorschach, the hard-boiled and relentless masked crimefighter’s signature mask has now become a symbol of rebellion. There is also one special reveal at the end of this trailer.

So yeah. A couple of big reveals in this San Diego Comic-Con exclusive trailer including Jean Smart’s character revealed to be FBI Agent Laurie Blake, also known as Silk Spectre II (Laurie looks to have never married Nite-Owl). But the big to-do happens right at the end, where we see the apparent return of Dr. Manhattan back on Earth after relocating to Mars.
The Watchmen cast also includes Don Johnson, Jean Smart, Tim Blake Nelson, Louis Gossett Jr., Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Hong Chau, Andrew Howard, Tom Mison, Frances Fisher, Jacob Ming-Trent, Sara Vickers, Dylan Schombing, and James Wolk.
Lindelof serves as creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer on the Watchmen series, with Tom Spezialy, Stephen Williams, and Joseph Iberti also executive producing. Nicole Kassell will executive produce and direct the pilot.
Watchmen was originally created as a maxiseries by the British creative team of writer Alan Moore, artist Dave Gibbons, and colorist John Higgins. It was published by DC Comics in 1986 and 1987 and collected in a single volume edition in 1987. The graphic novel is now considered a masterpiece of the medium and a prescient reflection on contemporary anxieties while also satirizing the superhero concept. Watchmen depicts an alternate history where superheroes emerged in the 1940s and 1960s and their presence changed history. The story focuses on the personal development and moral struggles of the protagonists as an investigation into the murder of a government-sponsored superhero pulls them out of retirement.
Watchmen is set to premiere on HBO this October!
