“I was born into this world, and my first memories of it are pain.”
Evan Rachel Wood’s Dolores is back in a new trailer for the third season of Westworld. We’re just over a month away from the third season premiere (a supercharged 70-minute opening episode) of HBO’s ambitious sci-fi drama and the premium cabler has released a new trailer.
Westworld Season 3’s official trailer follows many months after it’s San-Diego Comic Con teaser, which teased a whole set of different looks and scenarios than this trailer does. We’re going a lot further from the park this time but let’s hope they walk back the whole “puzzle box” framing of the story this go-around.
Check out the official trailer for Westworld Season 3 below:
The trailer uses that tiresome or effective (depends on who you ask) cliche of a slowed-down cover of a popular song. This time out we get a cover of “Sweet Child o’ Mine” by Guns ‘n’ Roses (we can probably let this one slide as composer Ramin Djawadi has provided old-timey covers of classic rock songs before and they are usually pretty great). The GNR cover plays over our first look at the return of the Man in Black (played by Ed Harris) and Dolores is seen approaching the complicated baddie in her old Westworld outfit. “Welcome to the endgame” she mutters while the Man in Black retorts: “I’m gonna save the fucking world,” possibly coming to terms with his true endgame in life.
Judging from the rest of the trailer all we can surmise is this: Dolores and Bernard have escaped from the park and are living in the real world. Teaming up with Aaron Paul’s mysterious new character to take down an individual they claim “took the future.” All of this is being juxtaposed to Thandie Newton’s Maeve, who is being recruited by Vincent Cassel’s new character to track down and kill Dolores. That’s the simple version.
This would all add up to a pretty easy pitch for a third season given the way Season 2 of Westworld ended…
[SPOILERS]
…A number of Hosts either dead or crossed over in the “Valley Beyond.” The Man in Black, in a finale post-credits scene, found himself in the post-apocalyptic distant future being interviewed by someone who appears to be his deceased daughter Emily (played by Katja Herbers).
Wherever you fell on Westworld after its divisive second season, it looks like HBO is continuing the journey of Dolores (or is that Halores now?) and company into brave new worlds. The third season will be shorter than the previous seasons of the series, with eight episodes instead of the usual ten. Given that extended season premiere, could this be a Game of Thrones Season 8 situation, with a number of feature-length episodes? Guess we’ll find out in a few weeks.
You can also check out the new poster for Westworld Season 3, which, let’s be honest, is pretty cool:
“New gods are coming,” Wood’s Dolores says in the trailer. “They’re very angry.”
Just what’s in store for viewers? Find out when Westworld Season 3 premieres on March 15, at 9 p.m. EST on HBO.
