GKids has unveiled an official US trailer for the Japanese anime film Children of the Sea, a tale set by (and in) the ocean which revolves around the mysteries of life while depicting the connections between humanity and nature.
Children of the Sea follows loner schoolgirl Ruka, who finds her days during summer vacation empty. She ends up hanging out at the aquarium where her father works, and she befriends a pair of mysterious brothers, Umi and Sora. The two boys feel more comfortable in water than on land, as anyone raised by dugongs would (yes. That’s right).
As incidents involving sea creatures multiply, Ruka believes the ocean holds answers to the mysteries. An aquatic odyssey of mythical proportions ensues. Starring the voices of Mana Ashida, Hiiro Ishibashi, Seishû Uragami, and Win Morisaki in the original version.

The trailer hints at some dense symbolism that reinforces our delicate relationship with the natural world. We might not understand happening on screen but the film constructs a meticulously detailed and haunting world of natural wonder and adolescent discovery that, in the tradition of the best anime films, fills us with an incredible sense of wonder and emotion. Toss in the fact that the score is by Miyazaki’s go-to composer Hisaishi Joe and character design by former Ghibli animator Konishi Kenichi and you have a film any anime fan should be checking out when it hits stateside.
Directed by Ayumu Watanabe, who previously helmed Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Dinosaur & The Green Giant Legend, and Space Brothers, as well as the anime series Ace Attorney and After the Rain. The anime film produced by Eiko Tanaka, animation production by Studio 4°C.
Children of the Sea is based on the manga of the same title by Daisuke Igarashi, who also helped write the film’s screenplay.
Children of the Sea first opened in Japan last summer. And it also premiered at the Annecy, Sydney, and Sitges Film Festivals last year. GKIDS and Fathom Events have now lined up theatrical plans for the first U.S. screenings of Children of the Sea. Set for two nights of screenings on April 20 (English subtitled) and April 22 (English dubbed), followed by a limited theatrical run starting on April 24.
Tickets go on sale starting Thursday, March 12.
