Bacurau: U.S. Trailer For This Gonzo Brazillian Western, Sci-Fi Hyrbid

Kino Lorber has unveiled the new official U.S. trailer for the thrilling and genre hybrid Brazilian film Bacurau. Described as a mixture of western, adventure and sci-fi, the film is set in a small town in the Brazilian backlands that disappears from the map.

Directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles, Bacurau, the film stars Sônia Braga, Bárbara Colen, Thomas Aquino, Silvero Pereira, Karine Teles, and the iconic Udo Kier. The film, a co-production between Brazil and France, revolves around Bacurau, a fictional small town in the Brazilian sertão, which is beset by strange happenings following the death of its 94-year-old matriarch. The film turns into a strange, grisly human safari in the Brazilian northeast, one that ends up exposing the country’s complex problems.

Check out the first U.S. trailer for Bacurau below:

The film comes alive with memorable performances from Braga and Colen, and of course the inimitable Udo Kier. The trailer showcases Pedro Sotero’s expert cinematography with sudden zooms and horizontal wipes that recall spaghetti westerns and offbeat sci-fi films of decades past. This is an inspired genre hybrid, complete with gonzo parables about the lasting impact of colonialism. It might not be for everyone but genre fans looking for something off the beaten track should definitely seek Bacurau out!

Originally selected to compete for the Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, Bacurau ended up winning the Jury Prize. It later went on to screen at other prestigious film festivals like like TIFF and NYFF (as well as the Sydney, Munich, and Neuchâtel Film Festivals) before finally receiving a U.S. theatrical release date later this Spring. The film opened first in its native land of Brazil where it went on to dominate the Brazilian box office with a $2.5 million take, which was enough to beat other Hollywood offerings playing in the country at the time like Us, Knives Out, and Bohemian Rhapsody.

Since the film is so unclassifiable it’s probably best to read over the official synopsis just to get a better grasp of the whole crazy proceedings:

A few years from now… Bacurau, a small village in the Brazilian sertão, mourns the loss of its matriarch, Carmelita, who lived to be 94. Days later, its inhabitants (among them Sônia Braga) notice that their village has literally vanished from most maps and a UFO-shaped drone starts flying overhead. There are forces that want to expel them from their homes, and soon, in a genre-bending twist, a band of armed mercenaries led by Udo Kier arrives in town picking off the inhabitants one by one. A fierce confrontation takes place when the townspeople turn the tables on the villainous outsiders, banding together by any means necessary to protect and maintain their remote community.

Kino Lorber will open Bacurau in New York City on March 6 with a national rollout to follow.
