Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed post-apocalyptic action game , The Last Of Us, is heading to Television from HBO.
The adaptation, which is intended to be a series, will be led by Craig Mazin, with game director Neil Druckmann helping to pen the script and executive produce the series. Mazin is best known for the phenomenal HBO series, Chernobyl, which was met with critical acclaim when it released in 2019, as well as a slew of Emmy wins. Mazin seems determined to bring in The Last Of Us mastermind, Neil Druckmann as a primary creative overseer. Mazin and Druckmann will write and produce an adaptation of the game. Naughty Dog president Evan Wells will also serve as executive producer.
The Hollywood Reporter states that the TV series will follow the events of the first game. THR also notes that, with The Last of Us Part II coming to PlayStation 4 in the spring, there’s a “possibility of additional content based on the forthcoming game sequel.”
“Neil Druckmann is without question the finest storyteller working in the video game medium, and The Last of Us is his magnum opus,” said Mazin. “Getting a chance to adapt this breathtaking work of art has been a dream of mine for years, and I’m so honored to do it in partnership with Neil.”
Druckmann added, “From the first time I sat down to talk with Craig I was equally blown away by his approach to narrative and his love and deep understanding of The Last of Us. With Chernobyl, Craig and HBO created a tense, harrowing, emotional masterpiece. I couldn’t think of better partners to bring the story of The Last of Us to life as a television show.”
HBO tweeted the announcement Thursday with a clip of the symbol of the Fireflies, a militia in the fiction of The Last of Us.
Debuting on PlayStation 3 back in 2013, The Last of Us was later ported to PlayStation 4 the following year and sold more than 17 million copies of the game across both platforms. The thrilling, environmental thriller followed the emotional tale of survivors Joel and Ellie as they traversed cross-country across the United States to find a potential cure to a viral outbreak that destroyed most of the country. Its sequel, The Last of Us Part 2, is scheduled to be released May 29 on PS4 and is easily one of the most anticipated games of this still very fresh decade.
Just like the tweet states, The Last of Us is “coming soon” and that seems to be the best release date we have for now.
