What. You thought this was a joke? Netflix has released the first trailer for Steve Carell’s new sitcom, his first since departing The Office.
A decorated pilot with dreams of running the Air Force, four-star general Mark R. Naird is thrown for a loop when he finds himself tapped to lead the newly formed sixth branch of the US Armed Forces: Space Force. Skeptical but dedicated, Mark uproots his family and moves to a remote base in Colorado where he and a colorful team of scientists and “Spacemen” are tasked by the White House with getting American boots on the moon (again) in a hurry and achieving total space dominance.

Space Force is led by Carell as General Mark R. Naird and also stars John Malkovich (Con Air, Rounders) as Dr. Adrian Mallory, Lisa Kudrow (Friends), Diana Silvers (Booksmart, Ma) as Erin Naird, Ben Schwartz (Parks and Recreation) as F. Tony Scarapiducci, Jimmy O. Yang (Silicon Valley) as Dr. Chan Kaifang, Tawny Newsome as Angela Ali and Alex Sparrow as Bobby Telatovich.
Judging by the first trailer, this is a far cry from the mockumentary stylings of The Office. The tone is somewhere between an attempt at Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove and the latter-day The Men Who Stare At Goats. It’s just a trailer after all, so here’s hoping there is a little more direction to the series when it premieres later this month.
The comedy series reunites Carell with The Office creator Greg Daniels. The two co-created the series along with executive Howard Klein of 3 Arts, whom the two previously worked on the acclaimed NBC comedy that ran for eight seasons.
Netflix feels as apt a place as any for Space Force as well. The streaming service has been home to The Office for years and ratings have reportedly been higher than when the show originally aired. Sources note the idea for Space Force was sparked by Donald Trump’s June 2019 order to establish a space force as the sixth military branch.
Space Force will premiere on Netflix starting May 29.
