Perry Mason: HBO’s Noirish Reboot Looks Like Prestige TV Viewing At Its Finest

Everyone is guilty of something.

HBO premiered the latest, full trailer for their forthcoming Perry Mason reboot.

The new original series Perry Mason, starring Emmy winner Matthew Rhys, premieres very soon. Based on characters created by Erle Stanley Gardner, this drama series follows the origins of American Fiction’s most legendary criminal defense lawyer, Perry Mason. When the case of the decade breaks down his door, Mason’s relentless pursuit of the truth reveals a fractured city and just maybe, a pathway to redemption for himself.

This new incarnation, created by Friday Night Lights producers Ron Fitzgerald and Rolin Jones, appears to up-end much of that original plotline and situate Mason, now played by the former The Americans star, as a more noirish gumshoe walking the streets of Los Angeles. It’s the Great Depression, but the city is also experiencing an oil boom, hosting the Olympic Games, and, of course, is at the center of a growing film industry.

Since debuting in 1931, Erle Stanley Gardner’s crime-solving defense attorney has appeared in more than 80 novels, a radio show, a handful of movies, and a couple of TV shows, most famously a long-running series starring Raymond Burr. This new HBO series takes the character back to his roots as a lawyer in 1932 Los Angeles, a city teeming with crime and intrigue. The reboot has been in the works for quite some time now and was originally conceived as a vehicle for Robert Downey Jr., who still remains on board as an executive producer.

The show will also feature such recognizable names as John Lithgow, Tatiana Maslany, Shea Whigham, Stephen Root, Lili Taylor, Chris Chalk, Matt Frewer, and Robert Patrick in an all-star cast. The new series is executive produced by Amanda Burrell, Downey Jr., Susan Downey, Ron Fitzgerald, Joe Horacek, Rolin Jones, and Timothy Van Patten (who also directs).

The show`s creatives will also be appearing soon at the ATX Television Festival’s very first virtual edition titled “ATX TV….From The Couch!” which is set to take place on June 5-7. The fest will feature the marquee panel conversation with the cast and creatives of HBO’s reboot of Perry Mason. Audiences will get a first look at the new gritty drama ahead of its premiere date.

Perry Mason premieres June 21 at 9 p.m. on HBO.
