HBO has released a trailer for its upcoming docuseries which draws from the late Michelle McNamara’s book of the same name that investigates the Golden State Killer case.
I’ll Be Gone in the Dark will also give a voice to the survivors and their families, documenting an era when sex crimes were often dismissed or hidden in shame. A timely inquiry into our macabre preoccupation with true crime and a cautionary tale of the dangerous lure of addiction, the series is a riveting meditation on obsession and loss, chronicling the unrelenting path of a mysterious killer and the fierce determination of one woman to bring the case to light.

The six-part docuseries is a comprehensive exploration of the case of an elusive, violent predator by McNamara, who suddenly died at the age of 46 while investigating the unsolved crimes.
McNamara had been working on the story for more than five years, compiling some 3,500 files on her computer about who the killer could have been. In April 2018, California authorities arrested Joseph James DeAngelo as the alleged killer. He has been charged with 13 counts of murder and 13 counts of kidnapping. McNamara is widely believed to be the person who coined the “Golden State Killer” moniker and reignited interest in revisiting the case. The case is still awaiting a verdict.
The book is both a self-examination as well as a haunting personal memoir of McNamara’s obsessive quest for justice on behalf of the victims and survivors of the crimes. Framed by an introduction by Gillian Flynn and afterword by McNamara’s husband, comedian Patton Oswalt, the book was completed by McNamara’s lead researcher, Paul Haynes, and a close colleague, Billy Jenkins.
I’ll Be Gone In The Dark is directed by Oscar nominee Liz Garbus (Who Killed Garrett Phillips, Nothing Left Unsaid: Gloria Vanderbilt & Anderson Cooper). It will feature McNamara’s original recordings and excerpts from her book read by Amy Ryan. The docuseries will also feature new interviews with the detectives, survivors, and family members of the killer.
Judging by the docuseries’ first trailer, this is looking to be as much a testament to the investigative reporting and subsequent work of Michelle McNamara as much as a gripping true-crime tale that sheds light on some decades-old murders, some of which continue to shake people and communities on the West coast.
The first episode of I’ll Be Gone in the Dark premieres June 28 at 10 p.m., with new episodes becoming available on the streamer on subsequent Sundays.
