It may have been the better part of three years but The New Mutants continues to stay on life-support amid the pandemic. We just got a new teaser trailer and news of an upcoming Comic-Con panel.
20th Century Studios in association with Marvel Entertainment presents The New Mutants, the upcoming horror-thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their mutant abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive.
Check out the short teaser for The New Mutants below:
The new trailer showcases Anya Taylor-Joy in action as Illyana Rasputina – aka Magik – armed with her glowing supernatural sword. This footage also showcases Marvel’s Limbo dimension, where Illyana was trapped for seven years back in The Uncanny X-Men #160 (August 1982). It was later explored in a four-issue miniseries spin-off from The New Mutants titled Magik: Storm & Illyana (1983-84).

The teaser also shows us how, through CGI wizardry, the powers of the other mutants – notably Sam (Charlie Heaton) and Bobby (Henry Zaga) – will visually manifest.
This trailer is the latest ray of hope stuck in a long line of delays. It’s also just one of several trailers, the first of which premiered in late 2017. The project hasn’t been able to catch much in the way of breaks due to it being caught up in the Fox-Disney merger messiness, and more recently the Coronavirus pandemic. Now, with cinemas all but shuttered around the world the question will be whether Disney will take the VOD route on the Mutants or if the film stands a chance at turning a profit when the movie can eventually (and safely) be released in theaters.
This short trailer in particular is just a way to hype the film’s virtual Comic-Con panel coming up next week. Fans will get a special Comic-Con@Home panel on July 23 for the first superhero horror movie from Marvel Entertainment. The ComicCon@Home panel will feature writer/director Josh Boone as well as stars Maisie Williams, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Heaton, Alice Braga, Blu Hunt, and Henry Zaga. Writer and Keep It! podcast co-host Ira Madison III will moderate.
Stay tuned to an “eventual” release date for The New Mutants, which we’ll likely know by the time the Comic-Con@Home panel happens.
