“No Longer A Kid. Not Much Of A Detective.”
Sony Picture has released an official trailer for an indie dark comedy titled The Kid Detective starring Adam Brody and it’s hitting theaters very soon after it’s premiere at the 2020 edition of the Toronto International Film Festival (sorta).
A once-celebrated kid detective named Abe Applebaum (Adam Brody), now 32, continues to solve the same trivial mysteries between hangovers and bouts of self-pity. Until a naive client brings him his first ‘adult’ case, to find out who brutally murdered her boyfriend.

In addition to Brody, the film also stars Sophie Nélisse (47 Meters Down: Uncaged), Tzi Ma, Wendy Crewson, and Sarah Sutherland. As for that “sorta played TIFF thing,” The Kid Detective was part of the Industry Selects titles – movies that would have played at certain venues if TIFF had the festival run normally this year so only critics and industry accredited delegates had access to seeing it, but the film has garnered solid enough reviews to warrant a viewing.
Making his feature directorial debut with this project after a few other short films previously, The Kid Detective comes from Canadian Writer and Director Ewan Morgan. Morgan seems to have struck quite the engaging, unique tone, blending the genuine stakes of a murder case with the self-effacing charms found in the best of indie comedies. It was Morgan’s earlier film, The Dirties, that eventually caught the eye of The Kid Detective‘s star, Adam Brody. The actor says it was for the way The Dirties was able to transition seamlessly between its drama and comedy, a goal in Kid Detective as well. “Even in the darkest of times, I’m drawn to this macabre sense of humor. Certainly, I have it. Certainly, Evan does too,” he says.
Originally shooting to fame as the cute boy next door on TV shows like Gilmore Girls and The O.C., Brody recently appeared in the Samara Weaving-led thriller Ready or Not, as well as the 2009 cult classic movie Jennifer’s Body. Brody says he was drawn to the story of Kid Detective because of his 5-year-old daughter Arlo, but she might not exactly be able to watch it just yet.

The Kid Detective is supposed to come to “theaters” on October 16 but that’s likely few and far between the actual reality so look for it on VOD around the same time.
